As @skotl says...you can also get glasses with the right UV protection so maybe get a clear pair and always wear them if you don't already wear glasses?
I had a fear too when I forgot to put the shield down on my speedglas....luckily 3m had allowed for me being an idiot and had rated the clear shield grinding shield for UV.
Also remember if the helmet is down most (I believe actually all) helmets will protect you from the UV even if the dark shield fails to activate.
I got flashed while I was stick welding the other day...zero effect but I was wearing my glasses at the time and I was about 2m away which helped (the energy intensity drops by the distance squared from the source...the inverse square law).
Doing car repairs my welder is pretty much always near the lowest setting...lot less energy which also helps.
