i dont buy into the air leak theory as hitch states above WHEN ITS REALLY COLD in theory it should not be temperature related if it is an air leak my transit takes longer to start when cold usually a flick of the key and it runs in this weather it takes a good few turns.

hitch have you timed the 20 seconds or is this just an estimate could actually be less then ten, when you sit there cranking away it seems like forever until the thing starts

If its only happens when its really cold then it may not be the leak off pipes, but Hitch doesn't state how long ago the problem started.

Theres also the possability the CCA of the battery isn't up to the manufacturers spec which would also effect the starting time.
CCA= Cold Cranking Ampage.

At a few degrees it seems better than when theres a heavy frost... i think.

Got loads of stuff to try now anyway. Trouble is you only get one chance at cold starting

my transit is exactly the same a good few turns when it very cold outside so it just maybe that is how they start in the extremely cold weather i would look for someone with same car to compare before you tamper after all if it aint broken then dont fix it

Does the battery look fairly new and is it up to spec?

Thought you'd had the pug for a while.... my mistake....I'd still check the leak off pipes....cheapest to part fix/replace to start with...

I have a berlingo van for 2years+, but bought her the car version recently.
Battery looks good, for what its worth, maintainence free jobbie though. Might connect mine upto it just to make sure.

I know it would be a pain, I'd be inclined to swop the batteries, that way theres no way using jump leads would effect the testing, but make sure you have both the necessary codes for the radios.

Do you always get the same heater duration on the light? my renault messes about duration wise and the only time you really notice it is the odd time when it does a short heat cycle and its really cold. Then it chugs away for ages before cranking into life...

Got the same problem with the DW10. I know the battery is going but it is 7 years old (original).
Air in the fuel would happen at any temperature so it suggests a battery or pre-heater problem.
You could charge the battery and put it back in the morning. The difference would give you a clue.

Have you checked the pre heat relay by taking it out and looking at the two connectors on the relay box one of them may of burnt out as I said in last post -- A common fault
to prove its the relay put a cable of reasonable heavy direct from battery to the glowplug connector bypassing the relay hold it there for 15 to 30 secs if car starts that mostly likely problem The relay needs to pass a lot of current in cold weather. Warm weather engine will start probably on compression only

Did a bit of messing yesterday early morning in the subzero temperatures, tried to get the small (bleed/overflow? runs from injector 4 to back of the lid) pipe off the fuel filter and broke the poxy little plastic pipe off the housing lid. Plugged the hole, and the pipe to get it going again for now. Been to a few scrappys, no joy. New lid £33

I did notice tonight when i had a quick look, a couple of tiny pin sized bubbles in the clear fuel line, between filter housing and i think the pipe that goes to/from the tank, bubbles heading towards the tank.
Only thing is, is this the original problem or caused by the bodge on the lid! Guess i wont know untill i fork out for the new lid

Not wanting to be a spoilsport, but low compression will also cause those symptoms, and will be worse during cold weather. Had exactly that problem on an Astra, a series 3 Landy and a couple of tractors. Honed bores and new rings cured the Astra, but the others were worth doing properly .

Put a 6mm bolt in the place you broke the little thingy off......think that fits! I still mantain that it is drawing air.....even though others say not. Systematically check the fuel line, try cracking an injector and seeing if that helps. Peugeots are buggas when you change a fuel filter but once air is out are ok.
