sip 130 mig welder

hi all, just joined and need some help please

Am new to welding and have been given a sip 130 mig welder , i welder came with no spoil of wire and i no i need to get a roll of 0.6

my question is when i feed the new wire onto the welder i have to pass through a small black tube about 2 in long and then in a set of rollers , now the old wire is is just past the rollers and goes up to the tip.

now when i thread the new wire and press the trigger the new wire will go into the rollers will it feed the new in and the old will auto matically start coming out the tip or must i finish 1st whats in the there and then start again ???

the welder came with no instructions so any helpful tips from you kind people would be very gratful .... kind regards mark

Welcome to the forum.

You will have to remove the old wire first, if the new goes in with old in place it will just jam up.

Can you see the end of the wire poking through the tip? If so grab the end with pliers and pull it through. If not remove the tip and try again.

With the wire out it may be as well to blow some compressed air down the liner to clear any dust &c.

When feeding the new wire in keep the torch as straight as possible to help it along.

hi thanks yes i can see the old wire and will pull it out slowly

as i am new to welding can you poss give me some tips on wire speed and settings for the sip 130 ??

i will be welding my discovery in a few places lol

also any idea please on were i could get a manual for it //

If you take a look through the SIP section on here you'll see that quite a few members have braced the wire feed rollers to help keep them in line. It's a simple mod which can make a considerable difference to the wire feed.

Remove the tip anyway, just unscrew it with pliers, cut the blob off the end of the wire. When the new wire arrives at the gun put the tip back on threading it on the wire, one less thing for it to jam on. Unhook the top roller while you push some wire through the feed then hook it back on and switch on pressing the trigger to run it through to the tip.

The wirefeed mechanism on SIP machines is a bit flimsy and what happens is that as you apply tension one of the rollers ends up canted over a little causing even more feed problems.
This thread shows the brace in place, others have made simpler brackets up to do the same job but no matter how you do it, the ultimate goal is to keep the rollers parallel to each other.

i can see what you mean now , from what i can understand sips have a common prob with the wire feed so will tomo have a look at it

have downloaded a manual also .

question on the wire that i need as i also need some argon/co2 gas as well

will any 0.6 wire do the job ??

or some of that flux-wire be ok in my welder??( so i dont have to buy gas)lol

Any 0.6mm wire will do Mark, small spools seem to be pretty much of a muchness quality-wise.

What exact model is it? One of the 130's is gas only, the other is gas/gasless.
Gasless wire runs with the torch as negative polarity rather than the positive polarity of gas/wire. There will be an easy way to reverse the polarity on 'dual purpose' machines.

I use weldability wire only because its what my local stockist carries but I don't think there is much difference between any of them, maybe apart from some of the stuff that has come from china which someone commented on in another thread.
If you're welding low down in the current range you should really use an argon/co2 mix as these welders are susceptable to unstable arcing on the low settings and it really does help. Plain co2 works fine further up the current range.
Flux cored wire is awful stuff to use really difficult to see the weld pool and the welds need cleaning afterwards only useful if your welding outside in breezy conditions and not really suitable on thin steel

also just noticed that i need a regulator to go on the small bottle i just got as it came with a big bottle have seen them in machine mart for £14 but is there anywhere on here i can get one cheaper please

or can i get away with not using one as i have just seen on a link on the forum for welduk and can i just use a nut and tail??
