Newall DRO to POS Colchester Triumph

I got a reply to my chaser email on Monday, saying they had my scales and were sending out Monday-Tuesday, and I'd get a tracking email to confirm.

It's Wednesday and nothing yet, but I wasn't holding my breath anyway....

That DRO is nice but it doesn’t look solid like the old ones, it almost looks a bit chinsy. Where is it made.

Of course it's cheaper made than the old ones, it's cheaper to buy... Have you seen the price of a DP series readout? Double the price of a NMS.
It feels well made anyway. Between that and the encoders, it's a step up from the cheaper magnetic strip ones. Yes it will do the same job, but slightly more foolproof... In theory...

I was almost buying one of the other DROs that M-DRO sell. I liked the look of the Eason ones but they didn't list scales long enough although I imagine they could have been had. What pushed me towards the Newall was the scales themselves, they just seem to be a better system and the ease of fitting is a big selling point compared to glass scales. Since having the DRO I have no regrets, the tool store is great and very easy to set up and adjust if required and the DRO itself is quite intuitive and works well.

I'm planning on going with the Easson on my mill. The diagramatic display looks a useful option.
Although it's a work machine it's not one that's ever going to earn much, more for maintenance department as it were. So the Newall is just a price step to far.

Selling point for me was the scales. Can upgrade the display at a later date if it doesn’t prove reliable

Possibly. I have a spherosyn scale on my pro track mill as a replacement to the acu rite glass scale that used to be on it. Works perfectly

Is it a standard Spherosyn? I think you can get ones with different outputs such as TTL
Not sure exactly what output the standard Spherosyn/Microsyn are but I don't think it is ttl, would be interesting to see, shame they have sealed plugs or I would have scoped them.

The bottom of this page, http://www.newall.co.uk/technology/ seems to imply that Spherosyn and Microsyn can only be used with Newall's own heads. Other .products in Newall's range provide more widespread connectivity.

I went looking as you raised my hopes. I want something the size of a Microsyn for a quill scale but feeding into a cheaper head.

Yes, that is the page I had seen before, so basically the same coil/ball design but just different electronics in the reader head to output the desired signal.
I think the reader heads are £300 or so for the normal ones, not sure about the other output ones.

Readout temporarily mounted to a lump of plywood sitting on top of a cupboard. Bits needed to finish mounting it properly hopefully turn up later this week.

You’ve made a lovely job of that mate, perhaps you could sell Newall The design of your brackets for this model

Nice job but did you really need to machine at the angle?
I reasoned that the beauty of the system was that it didn't matter as long as the reader (and rod) were in alignment with the axis travel and thus rotation of the reader head was not an issue.
Maybe the angle would have interfered with the mid spring though, not sure as I don't have/need one.

I think that’s the issue. It must have to ride over that spring fairly dquare
