Lathe shopping list/order

Okeydoke down to i think my last workshop purchase. I say i think as i have a few welding rigs, pillar drills. bench grinder/polisher. Fly press and usual smaller bits. But for the ring roller which i mite make my own.
Now all i need...ok want, is a lathe. I was thinking again at a multi lathe mill machine but i rather have separates and milling machine wont be used much if at all. Lathe alone not a great deal so just a now and then for smaller stuff like fly press tooling holder and tolls etc.

So i have seen a few and wondering which to look at. Colchester are good i know and Myford etc. I could settle for a Warco if need be but its a 50/50 on reviews of them. But not to up on Lathes really. A big thing will be my budget of £500 and Max £700. when i het it together that is so i would like to know what to look. And i dont mind a part resto project of one. Aslong as its not to far gone and costly to repair.

Now if all thats possible for the budget what should i be looking at ?

Turning wood on a metal late can be done with a few mods, but makes a right mess so wouldnt recomends it. Everything ends up embedded in oily sawdust.
At your budget your lathe choice will be quite limited. Id suggest Boxfords if you can find a decent one.

£700 for a lathe isn't bad, just be patient.

Scour the ebay/gumtree tips which come up on here.

Be prepared to travel / hire a trailer.

As big and solid as you can is my advice.

Look into lathes and different options, gears, gear boxes, screw cutting theads, etc.

Look into the differences between basic lathes and more complicated lathes.

Get to know what you want and what you'll need.

Or just do a me, and go buy the first one you see, knowing nothing, or slightly less.

Good way to learn.

Don't regret it.

Yep, one thing i was wondering about. the though about making temp covers for it to help keep the chipping/dust off.

I can even sew a canvas cover for the table to catch the chippings. i need to make use of my sewing machine you see lol.

I suggest you don't rush in.

First decide what sort of thing you are going to use it for and ask yourself some questions.

Are you going to be turning precision parts, or just making something roundish?
What size swing do you need? Are you limited on space? Do you have three phase, if not how difficult is it to convert the machine to singlephase, have you budgeted for this?
Do you need screwcutting capabilities? If so do you want a quick change gearbox or are you happy to swap out changewheels? - if so make sure they come with the machine.
Spindle bore and chuck mounting are also things you should consider.

This will dictate what type of machine you should be looking for.
Generally bigger lathes are cheaper than smaller ones due to the lack of appeal for most home workshops. However, they also don't fit in most home workshops.

Look carefully at the accessories that come with the machine - things like steadies, changewheels, backplates and collets can often be impossible or extremely expensive to source, and often missing from cheaper machines.
If you don't need them fine, but if you decide you might later you might be out of luck. At a minimum you want a decent three and four jaw chuck.

Consider how you will load, transport offload and locate the machine - a lot of machines are cheap because they require a significant expenditure in moving them.

Now is not a good time to buy one as the prices have gone mad and £700 doesn't get you much.
You also need to keep in mind that you will need to allocate a significant budget for tooling - often as much as the machine.

I would say bide your time, get your shopping/short list and start watching items on ebay to get a feel for the market.
Do some research in how to assess the condition of a lathe, and never buy blind if you can help it.

The best possible machine will appear shortly after you have just purchased one.

Right avoid that first one. That’s one of my customers lathes and before I set about it, it hadn’t been oiled or cleaned for 20 years. Headstock was bone dry.
