Setting up to cast a little lead keel for my boat project. Yesterday I adapted a gas bottle with a muffle to take a CH heating gun, to melt the lead.
Fitted with trunnions to tilt it when pouring.


One time use, so any old scrap sheet. The spout goes to the edge of the bottom, so, when pouring, the dross stays on top.
Mould:

Wood chars a bit, but not much, commonly used for lead.
Ballast keel is 200kg, so need to set it up carefully, and level..

I will post some snaps when doing it.

Not the first time I've cast lead, deff outside and wth the wind (gusty right now..) behind me. Don't want to join the Romans (What have they ever done for us..) in getting lead poisoning.

Actually, bit of gratitude to the Romans, gave us lead plumbing, where most of my scrap came from. Still quite a lot about here.

Nope and I tried everything. Whats worse is I cant under stand it after 2 evenings scratching my head.

Unless someone has ideas Im going to hide it far corner of the shed and do something else. This 32mm shaft er32 was a great time saver but I have the spindle mount or mt3 I can use instead.

How do you derust a tank?

Using phosphoric acid, after an initial shake with an assortment of nuts and bolts and gravel. Don't ask me how long it took to get all those bits out. Then a wash with hot TFR, then the acid, then duck oil and petrol, finally petrol and some 2stroke oil.
Please don't ask me where I got the acid from, I won't say.

Not exactly made today, it's taken a tad longer and still not finished. I still have to do some shaping on the final two into one transition and fit a 45 degree bend and V band fitting. No comments on the welding please, my old hands aren't as steady as they used to be

Made up the bottom hose for wifey's Pop hotrod project (the manifold above is also for it).
Just got to machine a couple of stainless "olives" to fit over the ends for hose retention.
This goes around the remote oil filter, up and over the rack and then reverses direction at the engine.

I had a bit of spare time today so I made a gadget to press and hold the brake pedal so I can check the lights on my own.

Bit of 3 x 2 and a half brick is what I use.

When I want to check the brake lights on my Tranny when on my own, I pull the plug off the switch on the pedal & a fuse fits straight into the plug between the connections.

I don't even bother with a brick and I am sure the last bit of wood I used was 3/4" x 1& 1/2" mine must be light weight M sport version.

Re checking brake lights work.

All those methods are great to see if at some point the lights will come on.

I like mine to come on as soon as I lightly touch the pedal so I can warm people behind to back off before actually reducing speed. I have drove many cars where the lights will come on but you are already braking / slowing down before they do.

Popped into the workshop on the way home this evening to pic up some lenses for the Crystal and decided to make a small body ER40 cuck for the lathe from some 60mm OD EN8.
Video of the lathe doing its thing with a couple of pictures near the end of the video and testing runout with a 10mm drill in the collet.
