Cordless chainsaws. Anyone know about them?

Oh dear, my budget will be well and truly busted!

Nobody's mentioned ppe yet.
Just like welders there's a pile of ppe to buy. Cut proof boots, leggings and gloves also hard hat with visor. Not sure about the need for earmuffs with electric but I would. Will double your budget at a guess

I bought the hat with visor but not the rest. For the occasional use I have I didn't bother. Probably not the best practice but if it is for private use, its a calculated risk I suppose?

It’s the same risk as a petrol one. People seem to think battery tools are less dangerous somehow. They’ll still bite.

The electric / battery saws are popular in Germany with carpenters. You can use them inside. They were using them long before the tree guys. It’s only since the battery ones have come on the tree guys have them. The carpenters always had chaps on at least when I saw them and that was early 2000’s

If you’re not a climbing arborist, chaps and wellies will do you fine

i use a chainsaw if im doing oak frame repairs super handy

A&E get see plenty of chainsaw related accidents A lot of folk dont like wearing sweaty cut proof trousers because they dont have the gutter and down pipe installed to drain the gonad area , basic cut proof chaps are popular and I would consider them to be the minimum requirement.

Absolutely, I am not advocating not using ppe. I weighed up the cost of the trousers verses my sense of self preservation and amount of work I needed to do.

Explore chaps. In a non YMCA manner.
They used to be a cheap alternative to trousers. The modern standard is the crotch has to be joined, the older ones were separate legs.

We have been looking at them for a while, all of our petrol saws are Stihl as is the rest of kit and would probably go with a Stihl one.

I was surprised by Project Farm results for the Stihl and did wonder if he had a wrong un as I seen videos where the top end Stihl battery ones are cutting through logs as fast pro level petrol saws.

I understand utilising a battery system you already have but some of the other brands cost as much as buying a Stihl or Husky and I would say the resale value on a Stihl or Husky will be higher and they are far more likely to be running standard commonly available chains/bars although some of the bigger brands run Oregon bars.

A farmer may eldest does the odd day for has a Stihl and loves it, they use it for fencing and hedging as well fire wood. He said the big issue is the day you forget to charge it, to me that isn't actually any different to the day you run out of fuel. They had a day recently where they had gone to where they were working and he had forgotten the fuel can

I guess it all depends on budget and amount of use, if you get a saw using batteries you already have I suspect it's just as likely all the batteries will be half charged sitting on another tool when you really need it.

I've used a file for years.

I'm crap at sharpening anything. Including pencils.

Bought a little electric chain sharpener grinder thing, and it's been a revelation.

Well worth the £20 I spent on it.

Have a look at Stihl Easy File, I've not used anything that gets a chain so nice. The teeth are like kittens claws and will cut you if you brush past the chain. The file size specific so you need you correct one, I think we have in 4 sizes.

One I saw was a cut arm needed 18 stitches, a minor injury for a chainsaw but the saw was not even running it just fell across his arm.

That's a Willan's harness not a Williams. I've got one as it was a donation and can't justify spending hundreds on a Treemotion for the amount it would get used. It's bl00dy heavy though

I've just had to take down several smallish trees and take limbs off a few others so we could get a new fence put in. The fencers brought a chainsaw for the largest one that was just beyond me, so I now have a humungous pile of tree. I have a shredder that will make short (ish) work of most of it but I need to get it into manageable chunks. Ive seen cheap cordless saws that take makita batteries for about £50 on the bay of evil, so the obvious question is di they work? It's not the kind of thing I expect to be doing again, so not worth spending proper money on, it would just be handy to have something powered to save me hours of sawing. If these things aren't any good, is there some other tool (apart from me) that might work? All suggestions gratefully received!

I like the cordless saws but they are no match for a petrol saw when used in anger, I think you should attack the pile with a corded or petrol saw. Get the cordless for occasional use on the log pile, I only use them to throw behind the seats of the machines or keep in the truck for occasional use.
