Steering lock problem.

Been struggling with the steering lock today, had to wiggle the key and wheel to free it.. Nearly every time I get in.
Feel like in going to get stranded.
2010 fiesta.
Any tips?

Have you tried lubricating the lock?

Sons connect does that if we use the key that is worn. No problem with the other key

I'll try the spare.

If it is a Tibbe type Ford key - you will need a new key from the dealer - not a copy of your worn key.

Key is worn.
Get a new key cut and it should be well.

The last transit I drove did the same.

They do. But if you get ford to supply a new key and fob, they will programme it for you.

If you PM a photo of the good key side on, I should be able to tell you the number.
Depending on the type of key, you can swap the remote and/or transponder chip.

Cost of programming a new key depends on the dealer.

We do allot of these - as transit owners snap them in the front bonnet release mech - dealership is the cheepest source I have found.

As a matter of info the dealership can also repin the bonnet lock to match the ignition key.

That is one of the reason one company I worked for went from ford transit to vervo vans.

Then we had the plastic handle for the bonnet release braking.

I have snapped a Transit customers key in the bonnet release in the grill - left key in and while working in engine bay - caught key with my leg and snapped key right off . Bonnet was open so no real issue getting lock out - had to buy customer new grill lock/key.

Bagged parts up - gave them to driver when he collected his van for an alternator replacement. Noted the non chargeable repair on the invoice.

I did not loose out of this at all - fleet company owner rang me the next day to ask me what had happened - I told him! (owned up). He thanked me and then gave me the rest of his big fleet to do. MOT servicing and repairs. We had only been doing odd electrical repairs for him up to this point.

Sometimes when something goes wrong - if you do the right thing - it will work out better for you in the long term. This chaps van fleet has grown year on year and he pays on the nail - email him the bills and they are paid in 48hrs. This on going work was well worth the price of a lock and key I broke.

Don't talk to me about bonnet release mechs - they are so poor now.

Keyed Fords are a poor design.

Double pull BMW mechs fail wholesale (sometimes going up the road).

Merc plastic levers are made of chocolate.


Bit of miss for car designers really - simple function they can't get right.

Always add spray grease to them on a service - because the damage to grills is not nice if the cable breaks on some models.

With me it was locking wheel nuts, radio codes, immobilisers and having to push the clutch or brake pedal to start the engine especially when the car was on a two post lift

Radio codes are not that much of problem of late - very few cars have them now!

Electric handbrakes is another problem when working on cars.
