paint on wood is bad enough even in the olden days the paint nowadays is better to a degree as long as he uses fire retardent paint
ive seen enough fireplaces burn or set a fire due to idiots and paint and materials too close to a fire wood stoves are much worse
painted plaster layered on soaks up the heat and spreads it wall bonding then plaster not plasterboard bloobed onto a wall
