A cement shortage? Is the industry 'trying it on'?

I've just phoned the place I usually go to for cement. He said, "we are only selling it with sand because there is a shortage of cement . If we run out of cement, people won't buy our sand".

I understand the guy's situation, but are the manufacturers trying to get the price up or something?

No idea but I tried to buy some black electrical enclosures this morning and was told both those and cable glands are only currently available in white or grey as there is a shortage of black pigment!

they were asking 70 quid a bag at the start of last years lock down ,, lots of diy ers wanting it and non rolling in , i laughed and said I would wait.

There is a shortage of plastics, cement and aggregates at the moment, in addition to timber and steel.
No doubt there is an element of price gouging going on too, but the supply to the construction market is currently very volatile.

The problems are from the manufacturers.

Lots of places I spoke to are expecting an order with 30 pallets of cement and only recieving 15 each time.


I've got ten bags spare. Shouldn't be hard to move on

This flipping lark annoys me. It’s why all the stuff in Lidl goes in ten minutes then is twice the price on eBay later in the same day but with no Lidl backup

B and Q round hear are limiting private customers to 5 bags and trade customers to 10 bags.

I had heard that one of the big manufacturers has had brake downs with one of their kilns and and it takes so many weeks to shut down and the same to get back up to temperature.

rubbish its bre.xit and covid when thats wearing a bit thin what are they going to blame thats the thing with kilns and furnaces u just cant stop and start them same as making glass

There dividing what they have among the resellers

I was at TP the other week for timber (also in short supply) and a guy in front was after some, they had none in any of the local branches l, guy behind counter said there was a shortage and if he found some to buy as much as he could lol

No there genuinely is a supplier shortage from the mills.

I wonder how much of it is caused or exaggerated due to panic buying like the toilet roll crisis?
I know plenty of people buying more "stuff" than they need because apparently it's in short supply.
