Silver solder a2

I need to create a base with 3 pads ideally hardened pads.

So I was wonder if i would be successful silver soldering some a2 tool steel pads on to a mild steel substrate. And if the pads will end up hardened?


After that i can surface grind to pads to be on the same plane.



Any thoughts?

Depending on the size of the pads, does the silver soldering not risk (over-) tempering the A2?

Epoxy resin might be as good as anything, perhaps in a loose counterbore for greater surface area. Let it cure properly and do not get it too hot when grinding.

Alternatively, carbide pads (slices of a broken endmill shank) will not be hurt by silver soldering heat, but grinding them needs a different wheel.

Have a look at Pete's thread on his rePete. o' meter as he used pads on that. Was it Mr Dcal who made a wire brushy thing? He silver soldered the carbide bar on that.

Yes carbide (which you absolutely can silver solder) makes great wear pads if you have a CBN wheel to grind them, I drilled blind holes and stuck mine in with Loctite. Let it go off then ground them flat.

As for soldering, if you use the low temp solder it melts in the 600degC range I don't think you'll be hot enough though I do think that you could pre-harden the pads and then use the soldering temp to draw the temper down. Either would do it.

Not having a CBN wheel was why i was musing other options, i might try the a2 as it should harden at 900c rapid cooling might be an issue.

Failing that i will try a HSS cutoff

Failing that ill just buy a CBN wheel and use carbide

Why not just use a mini grinder to cut off some pieces from a HSS milling cutter shank? Either glue it into some shallow holes or silver solder onto your base then up-end the part and grind them all flat.

thats basically what ive concluded, i just like some experimentation sometimes

Diamond wheels are cheap, fiver on amazon, if your going the carbide route, I assume they have a size to fit your surface grinder.

You could use carbide inserts and screw fix them? The tollerance should be good enough to not need grinding if the mild is flat.
