will an inverter run off a generator

as above? im talking about the standard 5.5hp honda generators and a 160amp inverter running at full power, willl it work i believe it wont am i wrong?

pity all ryt, both of mine have the boost battery yoke, will knock farts outta any engine on a cold morning seen yours nice an clean, there a great machine, i was burning a box a 4mm with it in the space of two hours every evening for a week when i was doing a bucket repair, the oil use to get hot, i often taut about peeling the spuds and un doing the ring a bolts

without realising was fairly warm .but still welded most of the day with it the oil temp hardly went up

you were lucky there was no lightening in them 4 weeks :P ya i find the cool better when there welding that running idle dunno why, anyways there built for work not to be looked at and mine hasnt done a days work since september, im all caught up studying this mechanical engineering

I was impressed by this hobart battery welder, 180 amps totally portable and self contained. I don't need anything like it but it's a nifty looking tool.

When did pickhill go to the wall? Great shame because their welders were top class, the Giant at work is at least 40 year old, mind you thats probably their
downfall if they last as long as that you don't replace them unlike that f****** crappy cosmo mig i got to do some really light fab work for her indoors.

I suggest you are not making a fair comparison, even in jest. There's virtually nothing to go wrong with a transformer-based arc welder, is there? It would be more than amazing if ANY mig welder lasted 40 years without the need for some attention. Of course, I'd agree that Pickhill's welding machines were top notch with ultra high build quality. Cosmo MIGs are not built to last like that but it's still not a fair comparison. Why didn't you buy a Portamig if you need something a bit closer to Pickhill quality?

why would you want to compare a mig to an arc(machine), no offence to anybody but thats as daft as a brush thats like comparing a dog and a cat, welding is the end product but of different processes, mig should be compared to a mig and a arc to arc, (machines not the actual process)

If you know the KVA rating of your gene then give me your welding plant details i will find out, generally the boards inside do not like the fluctaution a gene dishes out. but if you want i'll find out if it helps ya

On the IFL website their newer style 160 amp model is listed as needing a 5 Kva generator. The one you have is probably going to need the same size generator.

I think his comment was fair game. He laid into a brand for which I retain a certain amount of respect. I know it's the done thing at this forum to promote some brands and really go to town on others and I don't think it's one of the best features. I'm not sure it's always justified. A bad worker tends to blame his tools. And this was nothing whatsoever to do with arc vs mig. I think oilcooled may have got the wrong end of the stick.
