I remember having to get a 1500 ton floating crane to pick up a 50 ton work boat, in Singapore, because they lifted it as far from the beach as they could when it’s as an empty hull, using a much smaller crane. But by the time we had put to 400 cfm air compressors into it, and a whole bunch of steelwork, there was now way the same crane could move it.


I have an idea this might actually have been the smaller crane, they tried first.

Out of interest how do you find out in practice that the crane can’t lift it? Does it max out the hydraulics etc? Or do you have a real time torque gauge or something to keep within limits ?

I had one project where I needed to lift a plant room into a prison - 26 tonne lift at 54m radius over the perimeter wall meaning we were on a 500 tonne, fully ballasted.

Getting the crane in was the first challenge as we needed to open both ends of the vehicle lock which had the prison twitching, then three full ballast wagons to get in via the same vehicle lock - entire prison on full lockdown for the morning and, from memory, something like £15k for day one to get the crane rigged and operational with four days full operation to get a brand spanking new house-block craned over the wall...

Thats my look, however increasingly the clipboard is replaced with a tablet

......think it might be a health and safety nightmare though

I feel inadequate seeing this stuff.

I felt like I had big balls, the few times I've had a 300T mobile crane in... and never for heavy lifts either, just big radius!

It's not quite the same scale but here's the crane that was required for the superstructure of HMS Scott during the build. At the time it was one of the largest available in the UK (it dwafs the tower cranes that were on the quayside at the time) and was taken down some very narrow country lanes to be assembled on the quayside to lift the 150 Tonne (I think i remember that rightly) accomodation block on and the forward section of the bow.
It's that ship that was actually too large to fit in the dock at Appldore shipyard where she was built and who's draft is too deep to fit out of the river where the yard is. But by applying true British inginuity and attitude, they built it anyway! Sadly before my time.
