I assume we are talking city and guilds level 2 you a have passed, i would imagine that would be acceptable to most fabrication companies, it means you can stick two pieces of metal together and its unlikely to fall apart. A lathe is a fun thing to play with, im totally useless on one, normally just use for making odd bits. but better skill on it would be useful. Plus a lathe course gives the need to buy a new tool to practice on

I have been internally and externally verified and both guys say to finish the TIG course in 8 lessons is bloody good I am currently practicing on 10mm steel now and on Thursday going to have a crack at overhead for a giggle
First photo is 3mm steel T fillet vertical at 80amps
Second and Third is front and back of 10mm vertical butt at 120amps root and pass no cap First ever go trying it with TIG Ok but 1, need a purge 2, need to travel quicker 3, neaten up and weave more consistently

Jackel, you don't say what setup you have on the butt weld, personally, on 10mm plate i would go with 3mm gap and a very small root face, around 1mm. 2.4 tungsten and 2.4 wire, 125/130A. Get the wire into the root gap and keep it there, you should be able to tell by the feed if you are getting through or not, if in doubt, ease the wire back and you'll see if you are catching the edges. If you feel that you are a little on the hot side then sweep up the prep, this will help with heat control and leave a flatter pass. Other people will prefer a different gap/face, these are just my preference. You shouldn't need back purge on this but you do need to clean the prep and the back of the plates better, after grinding give them a once over with a flap disk.
I'm with Busa with 10mm setup except, I'd be looking to maintain a keyhole all the way up, dipping filler at best you can at rear & underside of keyhole.
Decent keyhole also allows decent amount of shielding gas coverage on root side.
Looking at pic, root should look and be cleaner, I'm guessing gap maybe on the tight side, can you use a tile?

ceramic tiles are fixed to root side of joint to be welded, there is a slight recess, this recess acts as an argon trap and, also helps the welder not to have excess penetration, also known as "backing".Oops sorry
Ahhh right No the college I train at the welding dept is last behind the dog in getting anything
