Although I've been welding for over 40 years I've never been trained formally or taken any test until 3 weeks ago. A large poultry company I do quite a bit of work for had a weidermann loader that snapped the main lift arm. And for some reason their health and safety manager decided that everyone who does any welding on the company machinery must be tested. No idea why as the lift arm that broke had never been touched from new. So three weeks ago we had an instructor come to their workshop and six of us. Four staff and two contractor's did three tests each all mig welded . A fillet weld on 10mm with a stop and start a vertical butt on 10mm and a horizontal butt on 10mm. The fillet went ok with everyone the instructor was happy with them. The vertical and horizontal were hard for all of us I found the root run no problem but struggled with undercutting on the capping runs. But eventually we all got a result that the instructor was happy to send in to test.
Well the test results came back today and all 6 of us failed all 3 tests.
