a newbie question about bolts and nuts.

I have the 1/4" bolt and 3/8" bolt on my tripod. this means i need the 1/4" and the 3/8" nut right?

but in my country, we use the metric system. so my nuts comes in M sizes. M6, M8 and M10. and inch-sized nuts/bolts are hard to come by.

and the problem compounds because i needed Tee Nuts, (to save myself from carving recessions for nuts/gluing the nut to the wood base)

so to fit the 1/4" and 3/8" bolts on my tripod, i need the corresponding tee nuts. but they are a rarity here in my country. I managed to find M6 tee nuts though...

is there any work around? or is there a website that allows ordering of small quantities? and ships worldwide (or at least to Singapore)

Yes, you need inch sized nuts.

Google for a firm called Namrick, they may be able to help.

What do you mean by Tee nuts, we may know them by a different name over here, a picture would be useful.

Hi Isengrim,suggest you try American car dealerships spares departments in your area,or restorers of old British cars.They are bound to have unf and unc nuts and bolts available,regards,Mick.

They could be BSF, Whitworth or BA sizes !!

These are T nuts, called the same thing here as anywhere in the world from memory. You might struggle to get them in fraction sizes for a specific application, They are pretty much obsolete for your sort of usage now. Best bet in is take a look in America as a lot of what they do is still English.

Most T nuts for your application are made for the job as apposed to off the shelf items. ( unless they are metric, still not guaranteed to be correct) In that link of tooling elements they do blanks that might fit your application, you will have to tap your own holes to suit. The other thing is convert the bolt sizes to metric if you can, it will make your life a lot easier.

Don't get confused with what i have said with standard tooling elements like milling machine clamping kits as they are made to fit T slots of the most common size T slots in machine tool tables which are often English sizes.

Most people that need them like myself in engineering applications make them up to suit the application. I know that's probably not possible for you to do but they are a easy item to make for people in the trade.

Camera tripod threads are usually 1/4" UNC or Whitworth, threads are so similar to be interchangable for this light job, Same applies to the 5/16" size

I can't imagine what you want a T nut for.
UNC shouldn't be any problem to get, look for a Harley dealer.
Classic car/bike places will probably also stock them.

My Ricoh camera is BSW but UNC would be fine.

Can you freehand draw , scan & post a picture of what you mean by a T nut ?

Tripod threads are 1/4" or 3/8" Whitworth - a thread standard now almost obsolete except for camera fittings. The 1/4" Whitworth thread is said for this reason to be the most common thread in the world but I take that with a pinch of salt.

Assuming the T-nut is not available to you in a Whitworth thread, perhaps you could weld an M6 thread onto a Whitworth nut to make an adapter. Or find someone with a lathe who could make an adapter.

Or get a Whitworth tap and make some kind of bracket with a Whitworth thread tapped into it?

Some posters are suggesting that a 1/4" or 3/8" UNC thread would work. If so, it widens your options.

actually i'm trying to DIY a barndoor/scotch mount for my tripod. roughly it looks like this:

now that i think about it.... massively gluing a regular nut to base board might be an easier option... The base board's made of wood.
