Shortage of machinery on Ebay

I don't know whether people are just avoiding Ebay or not but there seems to be quite a shortage of stuff for sale these days.
In particular lathes.
Only 1 DSG lathe for sale - searching for Dean smith Grace is no better, Smart and Brown you get almost nothing either.
I wonder if we have now run out of nice old lathes?

Well we haven’t made high class lathes etc for a long time
Massive export of used machinery and scrap prices have culled a lot of gear
Add to eBay taking 10% makes it the last place to want to sell

eBay is now just stupid expensive for some stuff, folk probably just do it the old fashioned way

plus with all that going on folk are minding thier pennies and not buying and selling much stuff?

one sector that has done really well is DIY and gardening

I sold a graphics card for £600. They took £75 off me in fees

Hmm, I know where there is one nice one, stuck in a dark corner......
You got room to build a nice workshop up in the wilds there @fizzy ? Would be the best place for this, in the warm and dry, short walk down the garden path?

Apparently the answer is not to use the auction - fixed fee rather than %age..

Selling second hand machinery on ebay is a mug's game unless you're a dealer and you just need some extra exposure. The fees are extortionate.

No wonder so much business is done via facebook these days.

I know a load of it has gone abroad - I can see a market now for bringing the stuff back from India

I dunno, I bet most of the machines that went abroad - if they weren't utterly worn out when they left, they almost certainly are by now.

Have a look at the way lathes get treated on Pakistani Truck Repair you-tube videos and I don't think you would ever want to buy one back. Most of their tolerances are adjusted by hitting harder with the sledge hammer so a bit of wear in the lathe isn't much bother to them.

like u said its tuff to find stuff ....word of mouth is the best way......
luckily kitted out my workshop 20 years ago.....still wernt cheap then......
even tooling is stupid prices.....wanted a Dickinson tool holder for my Myford......
£300 used and with only 2 holders......
took at least 5 years to find a good one with a few more holders for under £200.......!!!!!!!!!!

ebay has killed the prices of cheap[ machines also there is a shortage of them for sale bumping up the prices when i go to the sales people say there selling for x number of £on ebay my answer is your at an autojumble go sell it on ebay if thats the case done come here

i got my harrison of a tool dealer at ruffoth autojumble for under 400 quid .bought it instantly and had a wander round and came back and he could have sold it 10 times over for more money so could i

I recently picked up a ml7 for not such a bad price. Found it on shpock of all places.

Best thing I found for eBay is to set a sky high buy it now price, but invite cash offers. You have to be sneaky with communicating with buyers, but you can get the price you want and not have to deal with eBay fees and returns postage should things go tits up. I almost got stung for £60 return postage on an item recently when the buyer decided he didn't like it!

eBay's policy is that distance selling regs apply, even though it's a private sale. So buyers have 2 weeks to return items, even if they've had a play with it. It's a bloody joke. The only way around it is to advertise on eBay but deal off eBay.

I'm wondering whether its all the traceability...everything thats sold on eBay I think is monitored and if you sell too much then there are issues around personal vs business taxes etc....why I don't understand because if I want to sell a personal item at a loss it's really nothing to do with the tax man.

I think things are shifting onto facebook marketplace and the like...local sales...cash...avoid the ebay "tax" and scrutiny.
