Even Fred had to leg it once or twoce though. Remember that chimney that went slightly before he expected it to? He was burning the wooden supports he had put in and I think it collapsed faster than planned. The camera drama initially left you wondering if he would make it!

A favourite of mine, that overhang. Some wise words on the way up too. His H&S policy consisted of one sentence, "one mistake up here and it's half a day out with the undertaker".

I read the written job assessment for that. I went chisel out, shovel up, leg it sharpish, clean up. He supplies his own tools obviously. and he needed the shovel to clear up after the job.

Google "steeple jack killed" and then say H&S isn't needed . . . what is needed is people to understand what H&S regs are actually trying to do - and yes, that does include company H&S people too

I do outdoor climbing but that still makes me cringe especially the overhangs
the main problem I have is what happens if he has a medical emergency and falls? He might kill someone in the process... I’d probably be alright with it if he was wearing a harness
if you did that today I bet it’d cost hundreds of thousands for a full scaffold...

H&S 20 years ago was about h&s, but today it's mostly about the blame/sue culture, the not my fault syndrome.
Generally written by people who have a degree from Uni, and have never been on the tools...
I have come across "office h&s" many times it just beggars belief, how these people think jobs get done and others work.

CDM hasn’t helped this culture, you end up needing to write a zillion pages of documentation to change a lightbulb, the person doing the work isn’t necessarily any more aware of the risks but the company is at least protected... a one page risk assessment would be far better because the person at the coal face might actually read and understand it.. It’s amazing how far big projects (and small) take CDM, far beyond “so far as is reasonably practicable” no wonder HS2 and other large projects cost so much...

my youngster did it .had the big ladder out on the gable end to the top of chimney and daughter was missing near the road and railway nowhere to be seen till i looked up
she just laughed and climbed higher
managed to get her down fortunately . it never left her climbing 90 foot wind turbine towers offshore as a job
and doing the aerial on hms nothumberland while traveling at sea when she was a weapons engineer not for the faint hearted

100%, having to sit through endless health and safety briefings, safety courses, its no wonder the Chinese are beating everyone in manufacturing.

They surveyed it/did some work on it relatively recently, the last 8 years at a guess and they did it the same way, laddered, but with harnesses and ropes.
A lot are done by drone inspection now I think but obviously somebody still needs to get up there to carry out the repairs.
It's Dawsons, they still do it all be it a little bit safer now.

I sat through one in Colombia in Spanish (which I don't speak or understand) and still passed the test after
Company now has a several page risk assessment that needs to be filled out every day on the job - will not listen when I suggest the service lads will simply fill a weeks worth in as they go/come back. My boss for a risk put down "tiredness" and as a solution "coffee" . . the lack of the dire consequences promised for incorrect filling in failed to materialise - the form had writing in and was handed in, so that box was ticked.
I also argued over their definition of "dynamic" assessment as to me it looked pretty fixed. Nothing ever mentioned about always keeping a look out, checking your working area all the time - we have had engineers lose limbs in factories due to other carelessness.
