ps that's not rust showing through, I keep an oily rag or two under the tarp - shoulda wiped it off

Like the stand & that vice is seriously cool.
That streamlined shape of the vice somehow reminds me of a 1930's aerodynamic car like a Chrysler Airflow or somesuch.
6 Inch jaws wow it much be big, funny but somehow it doesn't look it in the pics, must be the shape.

Got this vice the other day.



No makers name, just a Patent Number.

But a "Whole lot of history."

It was striped and rebuilt.

But the history was research well.

The Patent number does not relate to a vice. The UK patent Office was very helpful.

They know of the "Wrong number" and why.

Wind the clock back to 1948 and the UK needed to make stuff for the export market, to bring in money.

What they needed was stuff the world needed to rebuild.

So using War scrap various companies teamed up to make a range of "Export vices"

The metal was from any ferrous supply that was of no use to.

very nice refurb - and can't help looking around, including my favourite woodworking vice - the older Parkinson -- lot of the same 'stuff' I have (I must get a new fire ext) - but if you don't mind me asking (being nosey), what are the two things looking like mini vertical paraffin heaters?

And mine was originally green, but I'd say it was definitely a Parky; wonder why they didn't cast the name on yours.

Apart from that the only diff I see is the ball release screw -- looks like a neat version on yours (mine is like arc t's

It's definitely a Parkinson. Ball mechanism handle had several variations.

I don't recall anything about Ajax vices and I also can't now find my old HSTE catalogue. Happy to attempt to answer any other Herbert questions you may have, but the little grey cells that supposedly contain memories/facts seem to be getting a little fogged up these days. Worked there from 63 to 79 and then back in the mid 80s as a consultant.

There's a vice with cast-in "Ajax, AH, Steel, Alfred Herbert, ?D, Coventry" on ebay at present -- looks similar to the Fortis.

Actually there were dozens going at £26k each 3 or 4 years ago at a military resale place, basically start your own recovery business. Low mileage full spec, mint condition.
