BMW sunroof.

I took the sunroof out of clients 840 to refinish it. It was all working fine. Now. Having re-installed it, I decided to hand crank it to ensure it didn't snag anywhere. At some stage during the procedure, it stopped working by electric and will only tilt. I'm assuming it's lost its memory. Anyone know how to reset it? Reading on line, so many people have differing ideas as I'm sure they are guessing or have read somewhere that if you tilt and hold the button for 5 minutes then flash the headlights.... etc etc.

@norsa Try disconnecting the battery and leaving it for 10 minutes, it may force a factory reset to 'default' factory settings.

I'll post your situation on the BMW forum I frequent to see if anyone there knows. Worth a try.

I've always wondered why BMW owners don't use indicators - then drove a modern'ish (2007) model and now I understand. The are several different ways to turn the indicators on and off (and it's very easy to turn on the wrong one by mistake when trying to turn them off), far more complicated that it needs to be.
Ask me my opinion of modern BMWs when you see me (polite version: great cars when they work but too fragile so they often fail and too complicated so repairs are difficult & expensive)

@norsa I've posted your question elsewhere, but it occurred to me that the wiring may be compromised or the electrical connections poor [not suggesting that you don't know what you're doing ], but just a thought.

I appreciate that if you've got the headling/trim all replaced, it'd be a pain to undo it all again just to check.

I’m surprised - on mine (2018 5 series) they work just like normal indicators? I found the system on Vauxhall’s (specifically an insignia) to be much more un-intuitive - they cancelled when you didn’t want them to and then either didn’t cancel or switched to the other side when you wanted them to!!

Thanks all. Working through the various beemer sources, general consensus was memory loss. Various suggestions and some quite dramatic (replace the wiring loom between here and here then take a separate fuse feed from the...,.. ) Anyroadup. Most seemed to suggest, use the switch to go to tilt and hold the button for about a minute. Nothing to lose, I chose that option and it obviously must have gone through all the parameters and the motor clicked after each one and guess what. Clever these German electronic dudes eh. Who would have thought.

Yours sounds normal, the Vauxhall sounds a lot like the 2007 325 I drove - it had a 5 position indicator stalk, from center you can give "gentle press" left or right for 3 indicator flashes or "hard press" for normal continious indicators. It (often but not always) turns off automatically once you turn a corner. To turn off manually you need to give a "gentle press" (left to cancel right indicator and vice versa) - too hard and it thinks you want to turn on the opposite indicator ! I think the same stalk has headlight flash and buttons for the dashboard computer just to confuse even more.
In total it has 3 multi-function "indicator stalks". Controls are too complicated, too sensitive, and it's too easy to make a mistake which I'm sure is one of the reasons why a lot of BMW drivers don't use indicators

Try an old Citroen, simple lever, switch them on, and they stay on, and on, and on. Self cancelling? Non!
