Engine goes bang between cylinder head & piston thanks to fuel, air and a spark
some "bang" escapes past the piston into the block (crank case)
Escaped "bang" causes a positive crank case pressure
pressure is released via oil channels normally out of the rocker covers

on a normal engine, that vent goes, via an ecu controlled valve, back into the inlet before the throttle body & reduces emissions/oily smell etc.
this causes the intake to coke up with oil & mess over time.

on this engine im taking that vented pressure and sending it to the catch can,
that oily vapour hits the gauze and filters inside that can & it separates, the heavy oil drops into the can, the (now oil-less) air comes out of the can via that filter in the top.

I have another option to divert that oil-less air back into the inlet, but...
that complicates things having more pipes (and has nothing to do with me welding up the hole on the throttle body that it used to vent into LOL) and because i will be running boosted required non return valves etc. basically makes it more complicated.

so ive gone with the easy vent to atmosphere route with the caveat that any oil-less air being let out of that can through the filter on the top will only be sucked back into the engine via that baby boosty boi right behind it

I had a Smokey boat engine due to crank case pressure, I just took the rocker box vent pipe and piped it into a 2 litre water bottle, and emptied it once a month.

didn't know this thing existed, thank you, great work as ever.

So does it have a drain valve on the bottom or something?

Or you not expecting much oil to accumulate?

yes drain underneath.

the amount of oil after certain intervals will give me a good idea about the health of the engine.

lots of oil, possibly poor ring sealing under boost.
not a lot, probably a relatively healthy engine

Pistons are low compression forged (because also turbo) and forged H-beam rods if I remember correctly.

it’s quite a highly strung engine. Shame it doesn’t like pressure in its oil system tbh

That's where the PCV system would go if you were recirculating it back into the engine on a turbo car, not into the throttle body. Benefits of recirculating would be to positively scavenge the crankcase, meaning less likelihood of oil leaks. Negatives would be compressor housing fouling if your oil separator doesn't work well enough.

That one way valve you threw away was the PCV valve, normal calibrated to suit the engine when it's run N/A I'd be worried that your not scavenging enough and will foul up the O2s if it gets too bad. If your going to run a wideband in it to ( you have made provision for that?) you will find they don't like being fouled either. I've never looked into any boosted applications, but the Older rover V8's were notoriously bad for using oil

You don't normally want oil vapour into a heavily turbocharged engine intake because it promotes the early onset of detonation.

Nah there’s more on the 1uz normally, drivers side rocker vents straight into the throttle body, the one I pulled out with the one way valve was the passenger side one and that gets routed via a electronics valve controlled by the ecu that I’ve thrown away iirc.
Either way any crank case pressure will now be vented out those 2 pipes into the can, no need for any one way valves or anything more complicated as the pressure will escape to a non pressurised container that vents to atmosphere.

if the engine doesn’t like the boost and it starts blowing by too much then the result will be a can that gets filled at a quicker rate. In which case it’s ce la vie. If this engine is poorly I’ll run it till it dies or push it to the limit with boost until it gives up. Then I’ll drop a built engine in that should handle boost much better

im not running widebands until the new engine goes in and I’m running a standalone ECU. Until then it’s literally a standard engine with standard narrowband oxygen sensors with added boost until it either dies or a replacement is ready

I’ve run the crank breather into the intake manifold on a couple of engines, with a small orifice in the line to stop too much sucking. One benefit is it helps cut down oil leaks. My current Ford Essex motor has it as standard.
