On my search for a machine of the 3 tonne variety,I’ve found one not far away,initially wary as I only heard of their cranes,so a bit anxious about spares availability,however it has a good old Perkins engine but what about the running gear?
It’s obviously had a life as the seller states needs a new slew ring,but

has quoted a reasonable price as an extra over the advert.anyone have any real experience of these @8ob perhaps ?

Run Forest run, any Atlas excavator is going to be a bit long in the tooth now Nick. Terex picked up the gauntlet and still do the spares but they will be at Terex prices.

Atlas used to run air over hydraulic, bouncy old things to operate and if you drop air you lose hydraulics. Dad used to operate an atlas rubber duck and hated it

That’s engineering to put me off,as it’s a long term investment,I imagine needing parts.
Found a 3t Volvo now to look at.

What sort of budget are you on Nick? And are you stuck on a 3t machine or is it just because that’s what you’ve found.

£10,000 max,can get the vat back,didn’t want too big and I imagine running costs on the big machines to be a lot more,it will stay at home so doesn’t have to be towable.
Seen a few 13 tonnes well cheap though.
@addjunkie ,like their cars then!are any diggers cheap on bits?

If you've got the space I'd be tempted for a slightly larger machine than a 3 tonner. Dad's got an old 3.5t IHI and it's a bit unusual that it'll lift it's own weight on the boom, there aren't many that can do that. I've certainly not come across many more modern machines that will.

Around the 13t mark seems to be the sweet spot for getting bargains, smaller than that I think they must be sought after for smaller properties. Sub 3t then they fetch a premium because they tend to be towable behind a 4x4 or van. I wouldn't have said that the bigger machines use proportionally more fuel. When I had a mate bring in his 13t Komatsu that got refilled at the end of the day with 50 odd litres of fuel, I'd have comfortably gone through the same amount on my 2CX which comes in at 5.5t albeit a backhoe setup not a 360. A lot will be down to the kind of work you're doing with it and how hard you run the engine.

Just throwing a curve ball for consideration but are you fixed on a 360 machine? I started looking for something similar but in the end settled on the 2CX as being a more all-round machine and I'm certainly glad I did. There's no way a 3t machine could keep up with it for loading stuff into trailers or dumpers - it's also got a hell of a higher reach than most tractor loaders. One of my parents neighbours had to build a little loading ramp to load Dad's 4t dumper because he couldn't get high enough, the 2CX will comfortably tip at almost double the height before you even need to start thinking about opening the clamshell instead.
