Does anyone know about secondary double glazing, and how it is fitted?

Does 'secondary' double glazing slide on to existing double glazing?

Reading on line, it says that secondary double glazing is a better option for reducing noise than having triple glazing fitted.

This is for a relative, and he is wanting the appropriate option to cut down on noise.

Secondary Glazing was , in my Everest days. Was a second pain of glassa few inches back from the main window.
Does a good god of reducing noise and to some degree insulation.

Double glazing is a sealed unit, consisting of 2 pains of glass fitted into the main window.
Normally filled with an inert gas of a vacuum.

Modern Double glazing is good at both noise reduction and heat loss.

Normally in a plastic frame on the inside of the main window.
The units can slide to allow the main window to be opened.

I had secondary double glazing. The main problem was cleaning the windows. I had to lift the secondary out of its track to clean the double glazing, then clean both sides of the secondary. Mine was Everest.

if its a listed building secondary ok but if not units are better

We had the everest ones here and in our previous bungalow. The frames were hardwood with aluminium channels for the glass to slide in, the glass was very thick. Cleaning needed removal of the unit. We live on a hill, when the wind blew and leaked through the oustide window the seconadaries bowed, leaking cold air.
They were cr*p, but better than single glazing. Don't do it.

It all depends on the quality of the secondry glazing,I live in an old cottage & the solid walls arre 15" thick,I fitted secondry sliding glazing but they're really good quality,and a 12" gap between them & the outer glass,they're also all 6.4 laminated glass[as they're all below 800mm] they very rarely mist up,& the traffic noise is barely perceptable,the reason is 1- it's laminated glass, 2-it's a wide gap between the frames, &3- the inner & outer glass is different thicknesses & that's what cuts down the noise. downside is you've got 4 sides to clean .
