Skip lifting lugs

I have put hundreds if not thousands of lifting lugs on over the years i have worked for this company. The 36mm diameter straight shaft ones with the end forged, standard ones you drill through the frame and weld with a plate on the back. Now we have a load of lugs ordered in with no straight shaft just a flat piece to weld to the frame so nothing is actually going through the frame. Obviously these will be welded on good but will they be OK on 8 yarders?

For comparison we usually use the top ones now we have the bottom ones.

A potential 2.5 to per lug, the bottom ones are only as good as the material they are welded to and will probably tear out. I wouldn't trust them on anything other than a miniskip.

Surely the design person will have carefully thought about it and specified how to weld 'em on?

Or have purchasing spotted you can get the surface mount ones for half the price of the others, and some junior agreed with their suggested design "improvement"?

Surface mounted lugs are more expensive which baffles me, they are alot quicker to put on though.

We used to use the standard ones by cutting a 150mm piece of 76mm x 38mm tapered channel, drilling a 37mm hole then welding the lug through the channel with a 8mm plate welded inside the channel at the back. These were made up before and piled on the bench for us to weld onto the side panels with nothing going through the skip itself, so they are just as good as the weld is to the 3mm sheet steel. We never had any problems doing that and they were 8 yard skips.

As someone who works for a boss who likes to get "value for money" out of his skips, I would up that estimate, and I heard about one skip where someone had been tracking a minidigger over it to compact the soil and get more in!

Haha never seen that before but have seen a 13ton excavator bashing wet clay down with the bucket, the lorry had no chance picking it up specially when the site was so boggy.

my advice stick with the first ones

after filling so many skips over the years and had so many skip wagons unable to lift our skips

and had to get the bigger wagon to lift them

and has had the front end lifting in the air just to load it onto there wagons

those first ones have stayed on without tearing

Thats nothing new,in my skip driving days some 35yrs ago that was common,esp with the under pinning guys,a right PITA for us drivers,so we told them to fill the skip up with water say around a foot,that way the sides stayed wet and the muck slid out better...................sometimes

What a nasty idea
Skips light enough are too thin a material so will tear off and big skips...

In recession 2008 I repaired skips, anything to put steam on the table.
Nearly ruined my business cos people don’t think good ole boy will do anything to feed the family they think ah old lambs a stupid skip welder

Also made worse by builders repositioning the delivered skips, most of them will shunt an empty skip into an impossible position for collection, then the poor old driver has to chain them up at awkward angles to drag them back in line

Apparently they sent the wrong ones its these they ment to order, still not seeing the advantage of these though there does look abit more meat to weld around than the old ones.

I guess you have seen that the parallel portion is 25mm compared to the original 36mm.

Best to hide all the 36mm drill bits or there will be a considerable gap to weld up.

Surely the complete skip has been designed, id be asking the designer/engineer you'd be crazy to put your name to a decision without proper professional guidance

Everything is designed properly and cad drawings are all approved by engineers in the know. I was basically starting this thread to see if anyone had any experience with the surface mounted lugs as I have not.

Both lugs we use now and the ones we used to use are fine i was just wondering why they would have chosen these new ones over the old when the old ones are cheaper. Both need drill holes aswel.

Skip stays where the they lay it for exactly that reason
