Stupidity and bearings

On its first job my Blanchard grinder sounded bad and dug in once it had warmed up
The top angular contact bearing is on a sprung preload once exposed I could see the glue
Some clown had wondered with it wasn’t a hammer fit in the housing so they glued it in with loctite
Result is a grands worth of bearings as it’s been rattling
Previous owner had over greased to hide it and I bought it blind

Couple of bicycle wheel bearings and it’ll be as good as new

Yes rattling marks on lower 10” diameter bearings
Me getting off sealed it’s fate!
Upper might go again as it wasn’t tight but not worth it

Plough grinder can still work with horrible bearings but not enough axial play to drop taper bearing out of race

Its worth looking on the yank ebay site for big imperial bearings, I have brought them in before now for a fraction of the cost. Might take a while to find them, you may need to type in Goddam bearings or something like it for the search engine to work.

I can only imagine 10" diameter precision bearing might be in nose bleed territory price wise.

Thanks I’ve already ordered them though the angular contact is metric.

The quill thrust bearings on my devlieg failed this week as well. Despite being a sixty odd year old machine to a American design made in england the angular contact bearings are metrics again. I’m not using super precision like original as it’s only thrust and I can’t afford it tbh, not with both machines with in a few days

Abuse of precision tools should be a hanging offence. Good thing you have the skill to put it back to how it should be. When you get a quote for new bearings , you see why any new old stock soon gets snaffled-up by the dealers.

But most lads on here are enthusiasts of metalworking, i have been in places where machines are only a method of making money, they get the poop worked out of them, and if they breakdown or give up they are scrapped and replaced.

Just wait until you install several grands worth of taper rollers with their specified spacer to set clearance . . . tighten everything to their specified torque . . . and it locks solid . . . Pick 8 tonne of machined fabrication up to press the main spindle out to investigate . . . no find anything and reassemble . . and it works . . .
