A hard to find feature too. There's only around 3 swivel jaw Parkinsons that I know of, personally. They don't crop up often. I moved that vice & stand up into my flat, the other day. Not that I'm protective over it, mind.

It means I can finally make a drawer for the stand, & use it. Opens sideways, so didn't have clearance before. I'm in the process of making either a new file rack, or tool shelf, for it too.

Heads up for anyone south of London -- there's a rather rusty vice under eby title "old vice" looks like a pretty rare Entwistle and Kenyon bench vice -- possibly with the even rarer swivel clamp a la Record 74 - says parts only so may be missing the little movable rack section, but my guess is it's just rusted up.
I have one without the swivel, looks v similar but not quite the same.
Shame if it just went for the starting £0.99, but who knows -- too far for me, but if it were round here I'd be keeping quiet about it - as it is, would be nice if one of you guys could go for it.

bonjour, je suis nouveau sur ce site, j'habite en France, région centre. J'ai regardé ce forum sur les vices depuis le début, très instructif. J'avais un étau avec une base rotative fabriquée en Asie il y a longtemps. Cela m'a été très utile jusqu'au jour où il s'est finalement cassé, sur la mâchoire coulissante, il y avait par endroits jusqu'à 4 mm de revêtement.

en attendant on m'avait offert un étau de marque Woden, un 190 / 7A à prise instantanée, ça l'avait déjà expérimenté. le support avant était tordu mais cela fonctionnait toujours bien. Je l'ai utilisé pendant dix ans comme ça sans problème. J'ai récemment décidé de le réparer, les vis étaient endommagées et comme je n'ai que des vis à pas métrique, je les ai redressées et refait les filetages avec de petites limes. pour info, il n'y a pas beaucoup d'étaux à prise instantanée, c'est principalement à base rotative. Je dois dire que j'ai utilisé plus la prise instantanée que la base rotative que j'avais auparavant, c'est très pratique.

en attendant j'en ai acheté un autre que je voulais similaire au Woden que je refais. Je l'ai reçu aujourd'hui par transporteur, j'ai été déçu, car il a dû tomber et une pâte de fixation de celui-ci est cassée. Je voulais savoir quel est le matériau de cet étau (Paramo) pour le donner à souder? l'avez-vous déjà fait? soudage à l'arc électrique, brasage, ... etc. merci pour vos conseils.

It was very useful to me until one day it finally broke, on the sliding jaw there was in places up to 4mm of coating.

in the meantime I had been offered a Woden brand vice, a 190 / 7A instant grip, that had already been experienced. the front bracket was crooked but it still worked fine. I have used it for ten years like this without a problem. I recently decided to fix it, the screws were damaged and since I only have metric pitch screws I straightened them out and remade the threads with small files. FYI, there aren't many snap-grip vices, it's mostly rotary based. I have to say I used the instant grip more than the rotary base I had before, it is very convenient.

in the meantime I bought another one that I wanted similar to the Woden that I am remaking. I received it today by carrier, I was disappointed, because it must have fallen and a fixing paste of it is broken. I wanted to know what is the material of this vice (Paramo) to give it to weld? have you already done it? electric arc welding, brazing, ... etc. thanks for your advices.

je crois que le materiau de ce Paramo (une bonne marque) est fonte ('cast iron' en Anglais) -- il existe des etaux de prise insantanee en Angleterre en acier fondue (Samsonia, Fortis, certains des Woden et Record, mais pas celui ci)

A spark test is the best way to try to figure out what it's made from, the colour of the spark, with an angle grinder, gives an indication if it's steel or iron.

My written French is rubbish....

Une essayage avec une meleuese donné une indication par le couleur des etincelles produit, si c'est du acier, ou font.

Google, test d'etincelles pour verifieé composition de la feraille.

Here are my largest and smallest bench vices/vises. A partially-consumed pint is included to provide a sense of scale. The big one is a no-name vice with a 200mm jaw width. It probably hails from some exotic locale in Asia. It had been preventing some tarps from blowing away in a friend’s yard, and I acquired it at the exorbitant price of zero. I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth (or a gift vice in the jaw?), so I have no complaints, especially since I’ve been using it for several years, and it’s still 'vicing' along happily. Despite its questionable pedigree, the manufacturer apparently used decent quality steel for the jaw inserts, which are still crisp and free from chips and dings. I just touched up the paint around the jaws today, as I’m sure it was starting to feel aesthetically compromised by the accumulated grime.

As to the little guy that’s clinging to the big vice like a remora to a shark, I “think” it was made by the Moore & Barnes Manufacturing Co. of Phoenix, New York, which later became the Phoenix Hardware and Manufacturing Co. It’s marked “PHOENIX” and “PAT. JUNE 16, 1885 H&B.”

I did a quick search just now, and read that Moore & Barnes manufactured a number of vises under the “Colton patents.” I looked up the 16 June patent, which is for a “Vise” by George A. Colton, which might be the one that applies here, as the patent appears to show a few similar features. The illustration below is from the 1899 Catalogue of Hardware, Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Co. I don’t know the relationship between the various manufacturers. I believe this vice would be the Phoenix Number 2-1/2, with 1-1/2-inch jaw width. At that time, the vise sold for $3.50 US per dozen (roughly 30 cents each). Using an online inflation calculator that I found (I don’t know how accurate it is), 30 cents in 1899 is the equivalent of $9.45 US in today’s money.

It has a built-in “anvil,” square threads, bronze or brass thrust washer, and can either be clamped onto a bench or mounted with screws. the jaws are harder than I expected them to be...not sure of the metal composition. It definitely has seen some use, although it’s in mostly good shape, except that the jaw width has been filed down slightly. I picked it up at a flea market (boot sale) or some such place for a couple of bucks. My wife recently appropriated it for her use, so it was on loan to me for the photo.

I have several other bench vices floating around, but probably nothing that would cause any vice enthusiasts or collectors to break out in a sweat.

My wife wondered how I could get excited about something like a vise, and I responded “That’s nothing! Just get me on the subject of lock washers or clevis pins!” to which she just rolled her eyes.
