diesel, what addative should I use to stop bacteria etc growth when stood for a long while

so one of my tractors I rarely use but dont want trouble with it going "off" as hear so many things about black sludge forming etc, whats the best addative that is known to work in a long standing tank of diesel. thanks guys

You always get some water in the tanks due to condensation.

thats the thing cant leave tank full to prevent condensation due to certain five finger discount type,hence before I get a problem I want to take needed steps (cant spell neccesary)

We use it in our holding tanks but not in individual machines, I would have thought if a litre doses a 2500 ltr tank a gallon or two would only need a teaspoon full.

Im with bob on this how long is a long time I had a back up diesel compressor longest it stood unused was 6 years, fathers DB probably gets used twice a year as of late never had any probs and he is to tight to leave a more than a gallon or two the tanks There always some one out there with a scary story to try and make you part withyour pennies

only if you use it in freezing weather add a bit of petrol stop it freezing and waxing just saying as well might not have any relevance

Remember some modern diesel has biofuels in it. A nice breeding ground for all sorts of nasties.
Modern petrol is just as bad with ethanol.

thats my concern, the pumps were made for old type diesel, not the modern diluted with all sorts stuff, I actually use so little in the tractors it would be more expensive for me to go out of my way to buy 25 ltrs red, so use pump diesel , which will no doubt freek a few out pennies wise on here. I dont want to ruin pumps etc on perfectly good tools for the sake of few Quid on the correct antibiotic(?) addatives . they should outllast me ,and I do expect them to earn their keep,the loader in my avatar certainly has and does.

You don’t need to worry about newer diesel fuel being diluted down, it was the case when low sulphur was first introduced but they got their act together pretty quickly and the new gear won’t harm old pumps, we used to tip five gallons of new engine oil in our holding tanks to add lube but that’s not necessary any more. All diesel fuel whether red or white is the same, it’s only an additive in the fancier brands at the pumps that may or may not improve performance or produce a cleaner burn.

diluted was possibly the wrong word, contaminated? with stuff that didnt agree with seals etc was what I was thinking, anyways appreciate the replies/advice everyone
