How deep to set this into the ground?

I am making a new set of garden screens, plasma cut as per the last set.
But these are going to be free standing not wall mounted.
They measure 2x1.2m each and made of 1.6mm mild steel. I have got some 50mm box for uprights. The spacing in situ will be similar to in the photos.
Question, how deep to suggest they set the uprights? I imagine into concrete as they will be in an unpaved area of the garden

I'd be looking at 2'6" same as fence posts myself but just an educated guess

Be tempted to put a square foot on the bottom and a cross beam midway up the burried section of post for concreting in

600 to 800 mm at a guess, not as much wind load as a fence so should be plenty.
Use postcrete to fix

Plate on the bottom sounds a good idea.
Depths are around what I was guestimating

600mm, No bottom plate required, Weakness in my mind will be to prevent rust/corrosion at ground level,

600 x about 1 foot wide round hole if its in to clay

I'd put the plate on the bottom just to make it harder for thieves to steal.

As this is a piece Of paid work that you are installing the answers above may be ok. But the correct answer is that you should engage a structural engineer and take his advice. You will need to factor in ground conditions and if there are any kids etc Or even if this is a public place

if it goes wrong a defence of “some one on a forum said” ain’t gonna get you very far

Hope the ground was hard

2' min for me fencing.

Usually buy 9' posts and cut em to suit rather than 8'
Soon as you need to go up the depth of the hole goes up too.

Well, what can I say?

I stuck 40 odd, 2.4m concrete posts 40 odd cms in, at 2m spacings, with concrete, initially they moved a bit, deeper would have been better, but 4 / 5 years later, not a single one has moved, copious quantities of sheep fence (?) attached up to 2 m high to keep my autistic son from escaping across a busy road, and its still all good, flooding the lot, grown all kinds of plants up them, and its solid as hell.

Just my experience, may not work for everyone, I'll look for some photos, wish me luck.

True, admittedly, but that lovely plasma cut design should let the wind whistle through it.

Depends how exposed his garden (?) Or planned installation site is. I'm not arguing with you, just relating my experience. You're almost certainly right, I'm a pro bodger.
