Well somewhat of a turn around for me today. Brother tapped the back of my car while reversing it out the drive and long story short its a write off! Broken light, small dent, hole in bumper=uneconomic to repair! 2006 Volvo XC70 was near 40k new.......
Insurance payout is more then I expected so I have a few hundred quid spare!!!
So its Sherwood 206 AC/DC tig and a farm standard stick welder next time I see a cheap Oxford on FB.

Shame you are at the other end of the country, I have two old oil cooled welders that you could have had. Then again they have been out in the damp shed for years so might have rotted through by now

Its been outside for a long while by the look of it so I'm going to have a look at the oil before turning it on.
Whats the cheapest way to get 25mm cable, I presume buying a set of jump leads?

Free - off a scrap car which has its battery at the rear.

Most jump leads now are rubbish. If you get a good thick set, keep them.

I, personally, would go for 50mm² and get long leads. I usually just get from my local welding place, last time I bought 70mm² it was about £3/m if I recall.

My Volvo is sat outside, ready to be written off and has the battery in the rear!
I bet the insurance wouldn't be happy if I ripped it out though.....

Just replace it with a bit of 2.5mm twin core stuffed through a length of red hosepipe
They will bring a recovery truck to take it away anyway..

I have probably got some used 25mm leads at a decent length if you want a cheap set or probably some odd lengths of bigger cable and the bits to make a new set up. Give me a shout if you want some..

I would be very happy to obtain second hand leads.
I'm a sparks by trade and have crimpers and lugs for most sizes so can make up from bits if required?
Let me see if this box of sparks is alive first and then decide whats needed?

Will this 110A be ok to weld up my JCB buckets? I haven't measured the steel yet but I'm sure its no more then 5mm?

Yea, you can run a 3.2 on that for a bit of bucket facing no problem

To be fair you'd be fine on 35mm2 on either of your machines, it's lighter than 50mm2 as well

Youtube Sunday morning and watched this old film.

I know its old and technology has leapt ahead but are these old facts still relevant?

I see plenty of people adapting their AC welders to DC but by the look of it AC is better?

I may have purchased a Oxford Flower Pot Stand!

I knew there would be some water in there but I saw fluid right under the first bolt I removed!

Unless these can resist water in the windings I doubt I would ever get it dry enough to test.
It won't fit in the oven, I checked.

So, apart from having £20 of Oxford welder spare parts which is not such a bad thing I suppose? Does anybody think the primary windings would survive this?

At that stage it probably wont do any harm to give it a wash off with a hose and see what it looks like.
If it all looks ok then dunking it back into some new oil should push all the water up to the surface, add some more oil to push that off and see what happens?

Already cleaned it off with brake cleaner and the oil is in 5l containers settling to see if I can salvage some of it.
I did see a online video where a guy pressure washed a transformer and turned it on later on. It smoked and bubbled steam!
I think it worked though.....
Maybe I will leave it until next week and give it a go? Its RCD tripping that will be the test though.....
