First ever attempt! (Clarke 135te)

Hi, I just had my first go at welding ever

i was using a Clarke 135te, argosheild light, and 0.6mm wire on 2mm plate

not sure if there is enough penetration on the welds tho???

i then thought i would have a go at a butt joint

criticism, feedback and comments welcome!

For your first attempt that's excellent martyboi. Experiment a little with different combinations of power and wire feed and generally develop a 'feel' for how things are working together. Concentrate also on consistency with your travel speed and bead width, overall it's looking good.

Hmmm, 1st attempts eh? That makes you a) a ringer or b) a natural
I'm guessing b), you've got off to a great start there, well done!
That brown soot could be down to either slightly low gas flow or it could even be down to incorrect torch angle.
Your butt join is ok but it looks like the edges are touching and the bead looks a little tall. You need more of a gap between the pieces which will make it slightly more difficult to avoid burning the edge away.
Very impressive start though, keep it up.

i have the regulator set at 10 lpm, but i do think my torch angle needs a little improvement.
yes i made the butt joint so the edges were touching but i see in the MIG welding guide today i should have left a gap.

Ive been out there again today

on this plate i was just trying to get the right wire speed in 1 , 2 & 3, then i was just trying different techniques in the rest (all with the same wire speed as #2)

I then had a go at doing a fillet joint (pushing the torch, & uphill)

then did the other side (pulling the torch, & downhill) but it was a bit windy

Then i tried a lap joint

I also cut through the butt weld i did yesterday

and stuck it in my weedy little vice to see if it would break, but the parent metal let go first... i was expecting the vice to go first TBH

opinions please...

Thanks caveman, well i think i will make the usual first project.... yes you guessed it a welding cart
But the main reason i wanted it is to do work on my track car that is also my daily drive (its a corsa before anyone gets too excited)
I have a bolt in cage ready to go in there, and i wanted to weld in some spreader plates, to strengthen the mounting points where the feet mount to the body (same principle as the lap joint i did).
I also want to fit some chassis strengthening plates in the future, and stitch weld the seams in the engine bay, but I'm sure ill find plenty of other things to do along the way

pretty much the same reason as me im building a mini with a 2.0 ltr vauxhall engine in, and my freind is into racing trucks and 4 x 4,swhat engine you got in the corsa

you got a progress thread of the mini?
ive got a 2.0 xe engine in the corsa at the moment, but ive got a c20let (turbo) that i will be rebuilding to put in there (when i can afford it)

yeah mate http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8781 not much progress just moved house and in between garages at the mo hopefully new year will be bring some progress. i would love to turbo the mini strugle for space though prob would have to go underneath on the exhaust

p.s if u visit the mini site you will want to sell your corsa and get a mini

just had a look mate looks nice, it will certainly go well with a xe in there (especially on carbs)

yeah mate should be nearer 170 bhp with internal mods im building the subframe myself took a few measurements at the beging of the build and would mean exstensive firewall and bulkhead work to get the let in might fit in the back though

you shoud see 170 easily mate, get some nitrous on it thats where the fun's at yea it would definately need fair ammount of , but im sure ive seen it done before so it's possible...
i dont know how it would handle with it in the back... but it would be entertaining
