Today sorting my scrap. Much more than I expected.

If your yards are like some here, you will get less money, as it is mixed copper for that bundle.
Cut the crimps off. Weigh them in as "heavy copper" and the wire as clean bright cable/copper.

My yard also takes the insulations, as some can be recycled.
Might be worth a ask.

Yes. This is on next task here.
Have to cut the crimps.
Than sorting to milberry heavy, tinned, coated and so on. Also got a lot of brass, ali, stainless and ferrous.
It will take also more time than expected. But need to get the stuff out of the shop.

I'm not sure what I planned to make today, but it certainly wasn't this...

Today I made some bookmarks:

There's a bit of a back story to these (although it's probably not very interesting!) A year or two ago when we were emptying out my father-in-law's house & sheds, we came across four lumps of wood coated in something like creosote. We weren't sure what they were but I couldn't bring myself to chuck them out so I brought them home. Here's two of them:

Having taken a hand-plane to the top surface of one of them, I realised it's actually quite nice wood:

I posted some pictures (with sapele, oak, iroku & red oak next to the wood for reference) on the ukworkshop forum and the consensus was that it's greenheart.

Anyway, today I was slicing one of the blocks up into a few pieces and went a bit awry with the hand saw so one of the pieces was a lot thinner than planned (and rather tapered across the width ). Following a conversation on another forum, I thought I'd do an experiment and see how thin I could successfully machine a bit of wood using my thicknesser (someone had commented that they wouldn't dare go down as low as 2 mm).

I passed the thin piece through the thicknesser (taped down to a sled) over and over again until the first time bits started to chip away. This is what it looked like then: you can see where it's started to chip out on the right and where there's a hole in the top-left.

I measured the thickness all the way round the edge and it's between 0.5 mm and 0.6 mm (I guess my thicknesser doesn't cut quite square).

I didn't really have anything to do with this thin piece, so I thought I'd cut it up into bookmark shaped pieces, treat with a couple of coats of Danish Oil (the photo at the top is after the first coat) and then my other half and her two siblings can have one each (since the wood came from their late father's shed, it seemed to me to be a nice gesture).

I was needing a tidy up and rearrange in the small shed today, one thing let to another and I got a bit carried away.

Started on a garden screen type thing.
3 panels that sit on a wall and stuff will grow up through it.
It starts at 1.2m high one end and will taper down to nothing over 6m.

Ordered some 30mm 1/2 spheres to go with the 30mm tube to make the ends of the "bulrushes" but they turned out to be nearly 32mm ....i had to make a die and use a press to get all 100 down to 30mm.

I started out on the chicken run. Chickens have their own lockdown at the moment, they need to be kept away from will birds because of Avian flu. I put the roof on a few weeks ago, today I hung a few doors, I've had to accelerate this as they are currently in the polytunnel, they appear to have an escape committee as they are trying to dig themselves out. I did this until the ends of my fingers went blue, I was wearing framing gloves, then went into the workshop.

Then I set to and did the first sanding and fill on 6 more dovetailed drawers for the utility larder.

Then I started on my brothers river coffee table for the reception of his new office. He wantd it for his birthday in mid March.

Now its beer o'clock

Well few things in these days .

Sent a letter to a girl I've knew 9 years ago, at the time didn't know she was interested to me ,so after little bit of investigation to know if I would get a buckshots rose on my car...
I've decided to contact her with a letter.
She doesn't use any social and with all things are going on with the virus wasn't a good idea to knock on her door (she lives not far from home) .
So take courage wrote the letter on my car steering wheel so nobody at home will make me embarrassing questions.
Waited the right moment to put it in her mail box .
Someone here asked how to approach a girl during lockdown time ago ,I think that it's not too bad I believe.
It worked for many older persons here hopefully it will work for me too .

Now less personal and more technical .
Picked up few things to repair ,an angle grinder , two SDS max Rotary hammers, and an animal Taser thing (suitable for bulls )
Yesterday a package dropped in the mail box , opened it up and it was the new oil pump for my Jonsered chainsaw, replaced it in the evening.
Today went to our property in the country to make a plan to repair a concrete mixer.
And this evening I've helped a Facebook guy via messenger to hack and fine tune his top handle chainsaw .
I did enough in those days .
Ahhh
Almost forgot , I've probably found a Stihl Ms361 which needs a new top end ,I still have to know how much the seller wants .

A bit more progress on the centre steady whilst I await the arrival of yet more bolts that I didn't have. After having a closer look at the main hex during the week I realised that I'd made a schoolboy error and hadn't ground a bevel on the butt welds so after MIG'ing them up last weekend and then grinding them back there wasn't really much filler there. Went over them all this afternoon with the Lorch TIG (have I mentioned how much I love that weightly little red box?) to add some filler; just gonne leave the purty colours as is. Tacked on some more metalwork and then tacked it to the base.

I'm quite chuffed with the project so far as in a break from OCD tradition I haven't obsessed over every minutae of detail by designing and modelling in 3D on Inventor first. And I think I've enjoyed it all the more as a result.
