Very late 50s - early 60s when I bought a Clarke 151TE to do machinery repairs while green-keeping [that and I'd always fancied being able to glue metal together].
Thank God for our fathers !! Kids today are not so lucky ,in the main, as it seems to me that most 40 year olds don't even know how to mend a bicycle puncture and don't mind being clueless.
Talking of clueless . Had my Jab yesterday and watched the doctor try to wedge the surgery door open with the purpose made wedge upside down. Each to his own I suppose but I bet I could jab a needle in an arm with very little training.

must be a scottish thing mate, i did exactley the same, made a trailer for my racer so i could get round with the lawnmower quicker, had enough room for my edging iron, hoe and fork too. expanded my gardening round thanks to that wee trailer, made enough money to buy a new bike.Just interested what age some of you startwd welding, I started at about 10 I think, made a trailer for the back of my push bike so I could move lawnmower between jobs easier.
My lad is currently 4 and has it in his head that when he's 5 he can start welding, he could be in for some dissapointment

mines was only 2x2 and a foot high but did the job, has a pair of wheel barrow wheels that did the job. no fancy tail gate on mine either lol.My trailer was 3ft long, 2ft wide and had 1ft sides, rear door folded down as the loading ramp.
