I would be welding plant and fork trucks outside and inside

would they have to supply

The Adflo Powered Respirator for cleaner to control the inhalation of fumes

to comply with hse

Legal requirements
Although all the requirements can be encompassed under the Health and Safety at Work Act Section 2, specific sections of COSHH also apply, for example, under Regulation 7, employers must ensure employees exposure to fume is prevented or adequately controlled.

Under Regulation 8, employers must ensure control measures (fume extraction for example) are properly used, implying that employees are to be told of the hazards, and trained in the use of the control measures. This can also mean that measurements of breathing zone fume concentrations may need to be taken to prove the control measures are effective, and to provide objective evidence against civil claims for compensation.

Regulation 9 requires the employer to maintain control equipment in efficient working order. In the case of fume extraction equipment this needs 'independent examination and tests' at intervals not exceeding 14 months. It is strongly recommended that fabricators routinely test this equipment against the performance data provided by the equipment supplier. The employee also has a duty to report any defective equipment to the employer at any time.

Not really sure tbh, i would expect they have to provide the minimum. For instance a disposable mask.
The advantages of an air fed mask is something you may need to explain to whomever supplies your PPE.

Not about breathing protection but the company I work for employ about 15 welders, most brought their own auto masks with them, if they break / wear out the company will only replace with a fixed shade tip-up type mask as it's the minimum requirement.

i was the same with the companies i worked for

if you wanted anything posh you had to buy it and then you will look after it alot better

Hi Ocean.

Ventilation during welding operations must be "adequate". Which means, simply, that whatever you're doing must be assessed according to the situation. Factors you might need to consider are - where you are welding - indoors, outdoors, in enclosed space etc; your position (you might be unable to keep your head out of the fumes if in a tight spot); welding materials employed - stainless, hardfacing etc; and material being welded - eg, zinc or cadmium plated, painted etc. For those last two sets of examples, you should have a clean air feed, or other means of extracting ALL welding fumes.

I imagine you will be using hardfacing rods?, you may be welding close to paintwork, you may be welding plated fasteners. In all those examples, and plenty of others, you should be employing full ventilation or extraction.

The cheapest and most convenient way of providing ventilation is an air-fed mask.

However if you are welding mild steel with standard rods in an un-enclosed environment, it might be considered that extraction is not required. Personally I think you should always use extraction when stick welding (although I don't, more fool me)
