Bench shears?

Looking for some bench shears to cut mid steel.Mostly strip typically 3mm up to 50mm wide, as big as 30x5mm,
What can anybody reccomend? I have some Sealey ones and they are not up to the job, they cope but only just. I want an adjustable lower blade if possible. Budget around £200

Hello Chunko,

I have a similar machine, except they are roller cutters and they are great except for cutting relatively narrow strip as it is distorted by the cut and ends up curved. Probably the blade types are better but it is worth being sure that they will be good enough for what you need. My feeling is they will also distort in this application.

I have a Keetona shear and can't fault it, had it for ten years or more.

does that apply to cutting long and narrow strips, without distortion?

On narrow pieces where you have to take multiple bites ,they put a slight curve into the offcut (if thats the bit you want). Nothing that you cant just flatten out by pressing it onto the bench afterwards.
I dont have the same brand but Id have thought any would be the same due to the curved shearing action caused by the back pivot.

Im with the others, old unloved ones are just as good as the new shiney ones (better in fact) with a little bit of tlc and grease.

Get one with the hole in the blade so you can shear small pieces of barstock, for m5 screws and m6 at a push, its brilliant to just nip off to length then dress up freehand back to a chamfer point on a grindstone.
Once youve got one on the bench properly mounted, you'll wonder how you ever managed to live without one.

I bought a cheapie from Northern Tools a few years back. I think it cuts up to 5-6mm. I've cut a lot of 1.5-3mm stainless with it and the blade's not lost it's edge. Pretty sure is was less than £100.00. W/A

Use a Gabro double shear at work. Wastes a 6mm strip from between the cut pieces, but has the advantage that it leaves the non-waste un-destorted.
Because it's double shear, you have to apply twice the effort in comparison to single shear, and the max MS thickness is 3mm (which is really pushing it anyway) cutting strip to length, not sheet.
Copes well with 6082 t6 ali sheet, but that's of no use to you

it's not so much flattening it but getting a straight cut. i.e., once it's flattened is it straight? A curved long strip is not a lot of use.

if u are wanting long strait thin cuts a bench shear isnt a lot of use u would have to use a guilotine shear

No I am after lopping bits of strip not cutting lengths off sheets, have a plasma cutter for that on.

I have meditated on it for a few days, I shall ring up and but the Keetona ones tomorrow. I wondered about 2nd hand but I want to know they are sharp and un******ed.

I promise I will not be cutting stainless strip with them. I dont think that helped the Sealey ones.

Thats all down to how straight your eye is when you move the next bite
If you position it straight repeatedly, the cut comes out straight...

And don't cut right to the end of the blade, or you will end up with notches (try it with a pair of scissors on paper and you will see what I mean).
Very useful bit of kit - quick and reasonably accurate.
