Manual Hammer Drill - Who knew?

I well recall the little Rawlplug hand drill/punch that Dad spent ages using - hit and twist, hit and twist - to make holes in masonry to then insert the weird fibre Rawlplugs.

But I never knew such a tool existed.

I would be curious to know how many hours of a tradesman's labour it would have taken to buy one back in the day.

Maybe I should Google it?

there was one doing the rounds in good nick last year at the autojumbles saw it at 4 diffrent stalls over the year. i still have a couple of circular hand floorboard cutters only retired it 15 years ago used it for 35 years and it cost 12 quid then i was only on a fiver a week at the time . just found my rawltool in garage last week there quite handy and quick in soft blocks still

That is the Rawlplug tool, but without the shoulder stock. A cheaper model?

But in fuel depots it is easier to use that than the hassle of taking in a power drill.

I still have the rawl plug drill bits and use them when needed

if you set your hand right you can hit and twist before the next hammer blow hits the bit really speeds up the hole drilling

the onset of the battery hammer drill has now taken over

but it still gets pulled out when batterys have died and i need to do some holes always carry one in my tool box really invaluable tool to have

I’d like as many pounds as holes I’ve drilled with a Stanley breast drill on sites years ago, that & the Rawlplug hammer & twist jobby. For site work the battery drill must be a godsend today. Ive still got a Stanley breast drill in the shed, had it for about 40 years & can’t recall the last time I used it, too much like hard work. It will be an antique soon, I could make it into a table lamp!

You’d only polish it up & ruin it’s nice antique patina it’s the posh version with the enclosed gears as well.
