Removing underseal.

Removing underseal prior to welding patches on cars!

I normally go for scraper and a small hammer - peel prize off the loose stuff - then go for an air grinder with a flap wheel on it - sort of melt/abrade the grey goo away.

Watched someone this week use an air die grinder with a carbide burr - fairly biggish cone shaped burr in it. It cut the underseal away a treat...



What does everybody else attack it with?



Oh...! It goes without saying - stainless self releasing slag and air die grinders - you must wear safety glass. Only a fool plays with these two mediums without glasses on!

I have tried this - wire brush sort of melts its like a flap disc.

From what I could see - die burr did not melt it - it cut thru it dispersing little grey shavings everywhere.

I just had to do this yesterday I managed to get it off with a flap disk Id did melt it a little but any spatter rubbed off with my hand and the disk didn't get clogged.
I've seen people say heat gun and scraper so will be trying this on Monday

Best thing I borrowed from a bodyshop was like an angle grinder at 90 degrees with a drive wheel. There were elastic bands of wire 'claws' for want of a better description. It's purpose designed and was mega. I'll find out it's name

I have used a Ryobi cordless multi tool on rubberised underseal with a worn out saw blade, quite effective in corners.

If it's factory, I find that most of it comes off with a sharp wood chisel, then finish it off with a knotted wire brush, or now, my DIY electric bristle blaster.

I've tried everything and the chisel is by far the cleanest and most effective, but it doesn't get it all.

Air operated gasket scraper and hot air gun takes some beating , no blisters

Another vote for the cheap Lidl multi-tool and a sharpened plain scraper blade to remove the bulk of old underseal and seam sealer, followed by a twisted knot wire brush running slowly, so as not to melt it.

But my experience is with older products from the around the 1960's and I have no experience of how that copes with more modern flexible products.

The way i've been doing it for years,trick is not to press to hard,and also handy if you've got a variable speed grinder set on slowest speed
Also have one of these for the die grinder/ or drill again variable speed on slow

I used a die grinder and burr the other week and it worked well........i used it mainly to get into awkward spaces.
I was using a burr for steel and it took a bit of cleaning off after. Maybe a burr for aluminium would be good and not clog up with the underseal.

After trying many different methods I went with heat gun and scraper followed by radial wire brush run at high speed to get the difficult to scrape places then petrol to clean off any residue.

Yea I got the mbx, as said.
Absolute treat at underseal removal.
If not they do a wire brush attachment for the burnishing tools which does seem tempting also.
