The nice man from amazon just delivered this:

Been on my list of probably-won't-buy-it-but-want-one for a while and then someone on the ukworkshop forum pointed out that amazon had them for £27 which seemed a bargain to me (they're usually more like £45). There were apparently 14 in stock at amazon when the person who noticed the price posted it on the ukworkshop forum. A couple of hours later all 14 had gone!

It still strikes me as odd that some of the best metric-only tools that you can get in the UK come from an American company like Starrett.

This one's made in the US according to the box.

I just find it odd that you don't get lots of high quality german or similar metric-only tools over here. I know there are a few, but they seem harder to come by than Starrett.

Beautiful ground finish on them and in "as new" condition. Clean up and oil tomorrow.

It is, just along the road from us, back in June they talked about closing the factory and moving production to China and Brazil, not 100% what's happening currently.

That factory seems to have been clinging on by its fingernails for about the last 30 years. Be a sad day if it finally succumbs like so many others

A box of booze:

The meths my local hardware store sells has such a repulsive smelling additive in it that even opening the bottle makes me gag. I wanted some without the colouring as well to use for shellac mixes as well, so I got a few bottles of denatured alcohol to keep me going. This doesn't smell anywhere near as bad, which is a relief given the amount I bought!

Today I received, big thanks to Graham @northwest who kindly arranged an order & delivery to his address [Seller was one of those "Doesn't post to Scottish Highlands" ] and then redirected it to me, one of these magnetic chucks https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-X7-Per...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Really grips onto stuff - the only thing I'll have to rejig are the hold-down clamps, not a problem but as they come they're wrongly spaced for the small Amolco table.

Purely in the name of research I once tried a taste of meths

It's safe to say that you would have to be either very odd or very low in life to drink it regularly...
