New car recommendations please

I’m coming off the tools in the new year so will no longer have a company van. I’ll de doing a 40 mile commute each day on a mix of dual carriageway and A roads. Looking to spend up to £9K for a small low mileage hatchback or estate. I don’t want any fancy gizmos just a decent reliable car. Not too bothered if it’s petrol or diesel but wondering if petrols a better bet these days.
Top of the list currently is the Skoda fabia. We’ve have a 1.6tdi estate for 8 years (Mrs Waddycall’s car) and it’s been great. I don’t know much about modern cars so would appreciate some recommendations

When anyone asks me that sort of question I usually tell them to go to the Škoda or Hyundai dealer or website and choose what size one you want.

Ive just sold a 20 years old Toyota.....We had it 16 years and never had a problem...Once we had an advisary about brake pipes, less than 200 quid....otherwise tyres and a battery is all I remember

With a 40 mile commute I would be looking at a diesel personally

Japanese are generally pretty reliable, Kia & Hyundai have some good offerings.

I would steer clear of most newer Germany vehicles. They aren't as reliable as the use to be now they're made out of plastic fantastic materials & chinese chocolate metal + They're expensive to maintain

We’ve had Skodas for years and won’t hesitate to get another. Good cars and we get good service and backup here. The Fabia estate is a good small estate, surprising the room and cargo space. Personally prefer the Octavia but if that is too big then the Fabia is a good choice. We only get the VRS versions, last Fabia was the 1.4 super and turbo charged one, wife did kill the engine and had to be replaced and torque steer was terrible, so avoid that engine.

I can agree on all the above. Never had a Kia or Hyundai myself but would certainly look into them, they sure have become popular.

Had our 1.4TDi Skoda Fabia for over 10 years and it's now done 179,000 miles without anything other than regular maintenance and one clutch yet it still will achieve amazing economy

Ok only had it for a week whilst we were on Lanzarote but I was well impressed with the Seat Leon I hired. I think it was a 1.4 turbo (petrol) which was quick enough, lots of toys, leather seats and very economical. I brimmed it when I picked it up and gave it back with half a tank which was not a problem as petrol was so cheep out there.

Unless bit of info. Skoda were/are the only manufacturer to finish every RAC rally they have entered
