The ridiculously short counters need to be up graded to those like MODERN STORES OF THE PREVIOUS CENTURY, and be user friendly for quick and efficient bagging. Duh, can't they see how much wasted floor area there is between the end or the checkout counters and the end walls ?

They used to have long purchased goods belts extending to a big hopper type tray but it made for long queues when people packed things in their own bags at the tills .

That's why they have the packing counters at the non shop side of the tills . It's the quickest way by far to get people through the tills .

Like with Lidl, the speed at which the cashiers push the goods through annoys me, even when you shop as a couple, two pairs of hands can't keep up. It's not like they can even start scanning the next customers goods because now we have all this social distancing BS so the next customer can't even get to the check out area we are in.

Why on earth do they work like this?.....if a customer only has one arm, do they still treat them the same I'm wondering??

They treat this crip on crutches with respect in both stores .. much better than the Co op .
The odd occasion I've shopped on my own using the trolley as a Zimmer frame & crutches shoved in the trolley I've been asked if I need help , even had the trolley pushed to the car for me once too.

The UK isn't Germany and goose stepping through the procedure may be ok for some, but not for a lot of older folks; there is a lot to be desired in the user friendly department. Not everyone uses a trolley, and many people pull one of the tote baskets, which obviously were not designed to be compatible with the checkout counters; especially for people on crutches or a cane.

I just up-end the basket onto the belt.

That's good to hear and how all stores should be. I do feel for the lone woman with a toddler or two, they don't slow down for her either. It just doesn't make any sense to me, they shove the goods past the scanner at warp speed, piling it up then shout out the total cost. What do they expect you to do? If you stop packing the goods away/placing them back in the trolley even to get the money out, they still can't move on to the next customer until you are gone!

@bert The thing is people in the UK are slow & lazy. They don't work in the same way! Drives me mad, That's why I use self serve if I can so I don't have to listen to their small talk chat

When will they realise it doesnt work? Every time I go in lidl or aldi i end up queuing down the aisle. Five tills, only 1-2 ever open and a queue down every aisle behind an open till (subsequently blocking shoppers from walking around the store). I often only want a couple of croissants (as they are surprisingly nice!) but get put off bothering as it takes ten mins to pay vs ten seconds to grab what I want! The self service tills improve things but arent in every store yet.

You still get someone who wants to sort their shopping into 4 different bags despite the notice on the tills saying to load into the trolley and use the shelf at the rear to sort it. The system works well in our local Aldi and they open and close tills as necessary to keep the flow moving. If anyone is behind me with just a bottle of milk or a loaf I send them through first, that is me though not the cashiers fault if I made them wait behind.

Ive got a really big bag that I can fill.....problem is I cant always lift it out of the trolley and into the car....Recently Ive got another bag for the beer and wine....the heavy bits

Leave the bag in the boot . . . unload the trolley in the bag in the boot . . . easy . . . until you get home anyway . . .

It does though - if people go with the entire premise - sort your stuff at the bench provided, not the till. Stop pretending you're in Waitrose . . Works really well in my local one.

Some of the middle isle bins have been replaced with wheeled tall racks . I guess the presentation allows more goods per foot print if they are stacked properly .

It also saves them the job of manually transferring the items into the bins - just wheel the trolley straight out and remove the front. I wouldn't be surprised if the trolleys come into the store ready-stacked with goods facing the right way.

I remember my bro in law telling me about his shopping experience in Asda, He'd spent a good hour and filled the trolley and went to cashier who merrily flung all his stuff to the bottom of the bagging area, when he finished loading it on to the belt, he walked straight past it all and went to another store to shop and never went back

I have only ever had one problem in an Aldi with one guy who said you can't fill your bags here. I just said fine see ya....left all my shopping on the till and walked out. It was not as if I had that much anyway..

a lot of those awards are scams
a company pay a another company to host an award it just so turns out the company that pays for the award then gets the award for there product

yes it shoved through as fast as can as they hope it trains you to pack quicker as you get flustered so the next time you try to keep up
