I think, as radiotelescopes go, it wasn't actually very "good". It could only track objects about 6 degrees from the zenith for example. I think it was the only telescope that could transmit as well as receive, I'm not sure if the even larger FAST telescope in China can do that.


More modern observatories like the Very Large Array in New Mexico are probably considered more useful so would be more likely to get any money that should be up for grabs.

I must admit it seems a coincidence, but if you watch it in slow motion it does look like they snap, there's a fair bit of movement just before and they cold have sent the drone over to inspect it and been lucky.

Just watched that at 0.25 speed and kept hitting the spacebar, you can clearly see strands of the cable pinging off just before the catastrophic failure.
They probably knew it was only a matter of time and had been filming it for a while, I very much doubt they launched that drone on the offchance it would happen.

The time stamp is around 8am. Morning Sun and heat on an already teetering structure. I reckon they were on site and heard the wires failing. Wouldn't take long to get a drone up there.

It's definitely not deliberate, it would have been much more controlled if it was and in all honesty, could you imagine being asked to get up there and rig it for demolition?
