Huntingdon multi strike tungsten

I want to try these but Can't find anywhere that sells them in singles, just ordered some 1.6 and 2.4 lanth along with an scc foot remote from r tec, I've been using 2.4 zirc on everything from 1.5-6mm ally, also would like smaller than 1.6 alu rods as I can't get the hang of mig wire with the curve coming of the reel and can't straighten it enough

Don't know about the multi strikes, but the lathanated work for me as I'm not good enough at tig to know any difference.
Have you tried doubling the mig wire, holding the folded end in a vice and winding it with a cordless drill?
It will straighten it and give a nice grippy profile to hold on to. If you need really thin wire it works with 0.6 wire as well

You’ll be lucky. Only ever seen them in packa of 10. The 1.6 are less than £15. The 2.4s are alot more

The multi strike Huntingdon Fusion are the blue 2% lanthanated tungsten. I use them. Not sure where my company get them from though. I can find out tomorrow.

I use a 1.6mm tungsten for anything 2mm and below.

2.4mm for anything above 2mm material

I've seen the 2.4 multi for around £35 only want to try them and see just how good they are I keep thoriated a zirciniated if there where a pack that had 5, 1.6 and 5, 2.4 that would be perfect

You dont want to snap any tungsten. It can spilt, you might no see until you strike up. Better to either cut, or grind back

Been doing that for years it does split a bit the odd time, normally only happens on something I want to look nice

Exactly. TIG welding is like the game of Golf. One day you think you have it nailed. The next shot ego gets the better of you and.... just like TIG take your eye off the ball and it will go tits up

I use blue and gold lanthated 2.4s for everything.
Tried some E3 purples over the last week or two, didn't notice any difference on DC.
I'll stick to buying blues. They seem to be the best all round, and they stay sharp for ages... I can run metres and metres of TIG rod if I don't dip.
I can't see how you'd get any material benefit to anything "better"... AC is a different ballgame though.

I’ve bought my hft tungstens from weldtec in Glasgow, though I now buy a whole pack I have bought them in say threes before.

I didn't realise this - I'll be cutting from now on - snapping them isn't very accurate, anyway!

I've got them from West Country Welding before now.
They only seem to show full packs - but I think I got a few of different sizes years back.

Why would you want one tungsten?

I’ve run the HFT tungstens and quality Lanthanated (Plansee Austria).

You can’t tell the difference in my opinion. Maybe in a robotic application?

Ive got about 600quids worth of tungstens I dont use anymore. They get used for **** **ty jobs and cleaning up

HFT is a darker blue than 2% lanth (As per your pic). I wanted some a few years ago, in the end a member on here posted me some. I can't tell them apart from 2% lanth' in use, to be honest the difference between those and thoriated is probably just in my head, I usually dip before the point is too worn down anyway.

I recently got some Super6 2% lanth ones off eBay for home use and they were fine! Very cheap too!

I can, I think, tell the difference between Thoriated and Lanthanated, on DC. Thoriated seems to hold a point for longer. As you say, it doesn't make much difference in real world because sooner or later you dip anyway.

On AC, thoriated works, but doesn't round the end off properly, it grows nodules. So it's a poor choice.

I stopped buying thoriated years ago though, and bought only lanthanated for the shop at work, and for myself.

Lathanated works perfectly on AC with the right prep - I'll grind to same angle as for DC, and then blunten the first mm of the point. It then rounds off really nicely, and holds a point well.

Can I ask @Shox Dr, from someone who uses HFT tungstens, what are the advantages over lanth? Is it more AC than DC?
