Suggestions for a trough that'll take 1metre lengths

I've got some metre long wooden handles I need to soak in linseed oil, so I'm looking for a suitable container.

I was hoping to get something that'll be relatively cheap, and won't require much modifying, but I've so far came up blank.
The best I've came up with so far are growbag trays, but they're only a metre overall length, and a bit shallow for what I was hoping for
A length of gutter was another consideration, but I'd only get one or two handles in what gutters I've found so far.


I have thought about a 45gallon drum as it would mean I could put some racks inside to allow for drip drying, and have a lid so it can sit outside, but google tells me they're less than a metre tall. If I can't find something cheap and suitable, I may just go and weld two drums together.

Cut the bottom out of an old IBC, you can choose the depth.Comes with its own drain tap.

Make with plywood and lay some plastic sheeting in it?

How many are you doing? Make it from timber and line with plastic, dpm or pond liner. If the oil eats the plastic, use tin foil instead?

I had thought about that, and could be an option.
My idea of a drum was so it could be laid on it's side, so not that much oil would be needed.

I did think about that, but far bigger than what I was hoping for. I think there may even be one lying around somewhere if I need to scale up production in a big way though!

Suffers from being under a metre high, same as a metal drum.

I made a trough out of a few scaffie planks 7 foot long and lined it with visqueen and filled with creosote to dip fence board in easy and cheap . any size you like

That was my other idea, but I've not got that much wood laying around, hence I was looking for something cheap to buy.

just the polythene and dig a trench in the garden and drop it in it cant get any cheaper

If you put caps top and bottom can be stored out of the way easily too.

How many are you doing at once? You could get some 2" PVC pipe, cap one end and do one at a time.

I was hoping for at least 3 or 4.
I'm trying to compromise between something that'll take 3 or 4 handles, without needing gallons of oil. Laid flat on a tray with 1/2" layer of linseed oil, and the oil will soak right through overnight.
Going for a pipe stood on it's end, and I'd need to always put the same number of handles in to keep the level up high.

I think something custom made from some wood will likely be the best option for now, unless I can find a cheap enough trough of some kind

Cap both ends and lay it flat, it's a tray you can't spill.

Screwfix do 32mm waste pipe, two blanking caps and 3 metres of pipe is about 7 quid.

Make a dip tank with plastic sheeting.

This was for some selenium dioxide chemical blacking. Put some thought into how you're going to store it and empty it...

I've a stupid galvanised trough, you can have, it's 4 to 6 meters long, came with the house, if you can collect or pick it up its yours, and another concrete one. Bit heavier.

I’ve used capped 150 mm underground pipe for citric acid soaking some long screws that raise and lower my press platen.

More convenient when horizontal so when doing long bits of my folder I bought two plastic cattle feed troughs from a farm supply place and they weren’t too expensive iirc.

Why not just stand them up in a paint pot, or similar, and repeatedly apply linseed oil using a paintbrush until no more is absorbed. Or am I missing something here?
