It is an up and over roller door and has a turn handle lock. Its key is just like a front door with an number of cutouts that operate the tumblers( if that is what they are called) It was fitted before I bought the house and I have lived here for 14 years. Over the years it has worked OK but now and then it refuses to turn open. I used WD40 and normally that worked. But today it has not. I have a second key and that does not work also. So I think the barrel has worn to the point that the key cutouts dont fit the key profile anymore as they should. So the only solution I can think of is drilling the barrel but will that be enough to be able to get the lock mechanism to work? Will normal drills bits do the job?

The mechanism turns levers to each side of the door at the key height which is two thirds down the door. The barrel is not that big so (even) if I get it drilled out turning the mechanism is going to be a challenge. Most of my tools are in the garage though I have some in two other work areas thankfully. What I am worried about is getting the gubbins drilled out. Are these hardened or will normal good drills do it?

graphite powder , or the scrapings off a pencil lead is the way to go , wont freeze and dirt wont stick , dry lube.

If you have a spare key try that as it may be less work i normally do a figure of 8 action and go in slow (no jokes please) lol

I know the left / right latching type your on about, when my dad lost his last remaining key I just pulled it open and bent back the damage after. His was a one piece solid up and over, so maybe not good in your case.
If its the only key you have, try the wiggling and graphite technique as above.

Somebody used a slide hammer with a screw tightened into the key slot, Pulled the barrel right out and opened the door with the T handle, I have seriously modded and improved the locking mechanism since, Now got a mortice lock to jamb the modded disc that operates bolts both sides and top and bottom,

Drill the lock and then replace with new item seeing the old is fubared
Apart from the graphite and oil trick I have tried the rest of the wiggling, new/second key and don't leave the key bunch in the lock tricks. Drilling is the option I asked about but am worried if it will come out enough to allow the handle (circular) to rotate to open. The handle itself is a closed unit and am worried about getting a new lock. The design and fit of the door does not allow any other methods of securing it. It is a HORMANN door.
Its very odd that bumping didnt work , still , start drilling it will be fine , have a look at a few videos on how to drill a lock , then you will have an idea of what your trying to do , its really only the shear line that needs to be gone .
