Keyless Drill Chucks

I’ve got an accupro branded one from msc wasn’t cheap but a really nice chuck hardly needs tightening and still grips really tempted by a second one as I swap this one between the lathe and drill and it’s a bit of a pain.

I got a rohm keyless from Antonio on here a few months back, and it's superb. Really positive feel to the tightening up.
It's also really small bodied compared to the Chinese ones I've been using! Which have been good chucks, but limited grip...

I'm trying to understand chucks. Mine is a keyed chuck with JT3 on it. From searches, that appears to refer to the internal arbour? The chuck opens to 16mm. What do I need to know about changing the chuck to a keyless one that opens to 16mm? Which is recommended as mentioned in my previous post?

JT3 is only relevant if you're intending using the arbour from your keyed chuck, or if you were changing from, say, MT2 to MT3, or R8, for example.

I bought a couple of keyless chucks from RDG and they are notorious for selling really cheap Chinese tat. To my astonishment they are really, really good quality so it just shows, they can be "variable" in quality. I also bought a "super accurate" keyless chuck on offer from MSC at a reduced price of about £150 IIRC and I couldn't see the difference. I do have a selection of Albrecht chucks and they just work, day in day out, all bought second hand. I also have a couple of the really small keyless from ARC Eurotrade and they seem to work really well, plus of course Ketan stands by his products:

you can use any chuck taper you like. A lot of the 16mm chucks take a B16 taper arbor. So if you wanted to keep using MT2, you would get a MT2 - B16 arbor.

Basically, choose the chuck first and buy the arbor to match your chuck and your drill.

Arbors are cheap, I think they're a good "weak link" in a drill press - if you abuse the drill then it'll bend the arbor before it bends the spindle or breaks the chuck.

Your MT2 taper in the drill/ lathe tailstock is a fixed size (you can get adapters but best not to if possible) then the other end to suit your drill chuck

generally, the bigger the chuck, the bigger the chuck taper...

I have used JT3 and B16 both on a few different drills/chucks and I don't remember noticing any practical design advantage one over the other. They're just slightly different self holding tapers roughly the same size.

RDG would be the last place i buy from.

Look at arc euro trade.
