It's a lack of gas shielding. The metal still molten but the gas turned off as soon as you released the trigger and I'm guessing you moved the gun away too.
Try holding the gun in place a little longer after finishing the weld. That should help keep the shielding gas around the weld as it cools.

It can also happen if you are welding up hollow section - sometimes at the end of the last weld (effectivly sealing the air in/out of the section) it does a little trump as the hot air is trying to escape right until the last minute.

I was stood in my kitchen reading when I heard a noise that sounded like a car door clunking. I looked out of the window and there's some hoodied toerag trying the back door of my van! In broad daylight, the little bstard. Age about 12 I'd say.He wandered across the road and sat on a wall, then realised I was watching him so he spread his arms and mouthed that gormless 'Whaaa...?' that they all do.
I nearly - very nearly - went outside to tw*t the little fecker, but then I realised that he'd be in prison by the time he's 16 so why should I let him into my life...

I used to live in one of the poorer areas of Manchester, my next door neighbour at the time was a self employed builder. After he had his van stolen for the third time in a fortnight, he placed a peice of plywood with half a dozen or so 3" nails driven through on the drivers seat, and covered it with a towel. a few nights later the scrotes returned to steal the van again, and one of them got a surprise and a trip to hospital.
My neighbour was arrested, and received a 12 month suspended sentence for malicious wounding. Justice? - I think not.
