It depends on whether want to earn your living as a welder or just weld as a hobby. If the later, what about an evening class (introduction to welding or whatever your local college calls it) £75 for a 10 week non exam evening class at Wisbech as against £470 18 week C & G Level 2 at Lincoln. We can pick what type we want to do (MMA, MIG, TIG) and get proficient and then if time left try one of the others.
For the C & G Level 2 you will have to stick to the sylabus and pass each module.
As somebody who started to gas weld at school 50 years ago and find the rules 7 regs for gas hire and storage a pain, I decided to learn to mig weld and will look to get a top end hobby/low end industrial mig welder for my hobby work.

I'm a fitter but did the evening courses to get to asme 9 in stick, mig and tig, and that was good enough for anywhere i went to work. A lot of guys who try pass themselves off as welders, are what i were told should be called "Mig drivers".
'Mig drivers' is a very apt description, I've worked with a few in my time. Unless the welder is set up for them they are clueless!

Courses are either free right now or just cost £150 thats level 1 and 2, im doing my mma lvl 1 then going on to lvl 2 for this exact reason !
Gte enroled fella and get those certs so any employer will give you a good shot at a welding job !
