Heavier duty garden tools.

Hey all.

After a bit of guidance as know I'm a bit out of touch with decent gardening tools.

After a proper hedge cutter to hack back some quite thick hedges. Branches will be circa 30mm in places and my dewalt 18v wont cut it as that's more of a trimmer.

Thinking proper sized petrol job will be better.

Seen a new stihl hs45 with 24" blade for circa £200. And whilst recon it's a fairly safe bet but wondering if there is better out there for similar moneys.

Circa £300 to spend for something decent ish.

My brother is a gardener and was recommended a Husky over a Stihl by our local machinery dealer, he only does small to medium gardens and bought relatively light Husky that he is happy with: https://www.frjonesandson.co.uk/products/husqvarna-122hd60-hedgecutter-21-7cc-24-cut/, he felt he did not use it enough to justify the cost of a professional one and wanted a lighter one. Has used it more than planned over the last few months and he is happy with it. He does not take on really large hedges.

For 30mm you realy need a lopper. That’s a hunky hedge branch

30mm is a bit much for any hedge cutter tbh. Get a 18v chainsaw to go with your hedge cutter

I recently got a used Stihl hs87R for the same purpose, cost about £150 (£450 ish new), although it is well used it easily copes with 30mm and the blade is 750mm long. There are two hs87 machines, 87R - is for reshaping e.g. chomping through thicker stuff. 87S - is for maintaining thinner stuff.

Not being contrary, but in this situation, would an 18v reciprocating saw be just as good and maybe have a wider use outside hedge cutting? Thanks.

I've go a Stihl HS45 that I've had since new probably 17 years a go. Only thing I've done in that time is give the blade a tickle and I fitted a carb kit and new primer bulb this year other than a spark plug,filter change and lubricate. I did have a screw vibrate out that I replaced 60p

It will chew through things that are too big easily if you just hold it against them. You do have to be careful because it wil chew through wire fence just as easy.

I would have no issues recommending one and spares availability is very good not that I've needed anything other than the screw.

First tool I reached for for hedge reduction was a chainsaw use it as you would the hedge cutter rather than pulling it out for individual branches

Yeah, I've got a Tanaka - had it for quite a few years, and it's very good.

I was under the impression they have something to do with Hitachi.
I think the (very good, well-ground) blades might even say Hitachi on them, but I can't quite remember.

Yea I can get a new one for sub £200 through a supplier we use. But keep hearing the new stihl isnt as good as the older ones which made me ask the questions.

Got a recip saw but just usually shakes the hedges as these are probably 10ft tall be 5ft wide at the moment and want to be halved.

That's what I do. Loppers for the thick stuff, hedge trimmers for finer growth.
