Table saw for planing?

Don’t really do much in the way of woodworking but have a couple of iroko planks I need to reduce down to 15mm thick.

can this be achieved with a table saw accurately? Thicknessers / electric planets are too expensive for a one off job. I don’t own a table saw but feel it’s a more versatile bit of kit

If the blade has the capacity to cut it, I dont see why you cant with some carefull setup.

The finish wont be perfect, you'll still need good sanding.

Yeh it's doable. I made these planks from a large chunk of Jara using the tablesaw. one pass went slightly over halfway then fpli over and finish the cut.

I’ve got a decent orbital sander to finish it, but essentially I’m making something that requires 3x 15mm thick vertical strips laminated together. It’s something that’s going to take a fair bit of strain so it needs to be a good fit for laminating.

I’ve a stash of surplus iroko cladding that I can mess around with so can always play around to see what gets the best finish

if u have a decent quality saw and blade its possible . don't expect much from a cheap one

Lots of TC teeth the more the better up to about 82 on a 300 mm blade much more & you'll burn the wood if it's a really hardwood with lots of resins, often referred to as a planning sawblade.

You want less teeth for ripping


Yes you can rip down the thickness cut half way then flip keeping same reference face to the fence go again.

Hi Phil , If you get stuck and depending where you are in Zomerset , I am near South Petherton , Down south , and have the kit to do what you want . If I can help , let me know . I can work lengths up to 2 metres comfortably .

I had a lot of 6"x 6" and 9" x 3" Iroko cut down to build some tables etc, Iroko is an oily wood, but BEWARE of the cutting dust, VERY bad for your heath, check it out first, Good Luck.

Depends on the depth of cut.

Have a look on screwfix. Titan planer thickneser isn't bad. I've put a fair bit of timber through mine.

The above mentioned, Iroko large coffee table for my daughters farm house, destined to last a few centuries I recon, Also made four small ones for the settee and chair ends, The Iroko was originally used at work, for landing turbine top covers and large rotary compressor covers on, New Iroko was bought in every four years when we were doing a major overhaul on the refinery at a cost of £20,000,And that was eighteen years ago. They did try to store it, but by the time the next overhaul came around it had some how all vanished!!

I've seen (on youtube, so probably a USA thing) a table saw "blade" which is very slightly conical (like a couple of mm) and takes a disk of sandpaper.
It turns a table saw into a thickness sander..
You have to tilt the arbor until the face of the disk is vertical on the perpendicular to the table, and the conical section gives a "lead in".

It won'tt take that much doing with a handplane - as long as it's properly set, and sharp

It is good to use the correct terminology in these things as planing (or jointing) is different to thicknessing.

Also the tool most suitable for your particular task will depend on the condition of the lump of wood you currently have.

Planing is used to make two perpendicular surfaces from anything that is a raw log upwards.

Thicknessing is used to create a parallel surface to another already-flat surface.
