Plastic coated wire and crimps

I'm looking at making a simple antitheft device for my sea kayak.
the idea is a loop of wire over each end. Joined in the middle with a padlock. The wire can go round roof bars on the car (There have been a few thefts of kayaks lately). The wire will be too short to allow it to be slipped off either end; so the kayak is secured to roof bars.
Yep roof bars are easy to remove but this would stop casual thievery
I reckon 10mm plastic coated wire will do the job. I've seen wire and crimps on fleabay at a reasonable price for a prototype.
Are these crimps up to the job?

crimping the wire? would a hammer or big vice (I could rig an insert for the vice) do the job or would I need crimping tools? there are heaps of these out there. must be cheapish as this an experiment. I reckon possibly saleable in the long term.
Any thoughts?

Have a look a Master Lock Python cable locks. I use them when out on the bike for securing helmet and jacket to the bike whilst walking about. You can get them in varying thicknesses and lengths and the cable pulls through the lock to secure it so you can pull it tight. You should be able pull it around the kayak and roof bars to prevent the casual thief.

I spent ages designing my lovely system that might have worked!
one at each of each boat round the bars and interlaced, no way are they walking off with that. Ok proper thieves are different but that will do the job.
you owe me sixty quid.

just to throw in another curve ball - wouldn't a chandlery make you a suitable coated wire rope to put a padlock on?
