its a welding forum weld it you cant love it that much all the cement on it mines shining like a sh...house door on a frosty morning .I even squirt it with duck oil when not in use . it must be over 60 years old as it was me dads. its quality steel and I fitted a new handle on it

Yes, tidy it up and make a border spade.

Looks like a stress break. They sometimes flex a lot when heavy digging, Just weld it, you have nothing to loose, Or as said cut off short to make a border spade.

Must be the day for gardening implements to break, my mother has broken a tine off her border fork today. She phoned before to see if I could weld it back together. It’s worth saving, it’s the best part of a century old.

I broke a shovel in a similar way, using it to lever a stone or something. I arc welded it with a buzz box, this must be 30 odd years ago & it still digs ok, bit slower now, but that’s me! From what I recall, I did one weld & got a shower of sparks & a poor weld, did a second over over the top & it went ok. Welded both sides like this & ground it off. I don’t suppose it’s anything like as strong, but it’s lasted the distance. I try to avoid using it, I don’t like digging

think mines Bulldog.....all metal.....got three, two normal wide and the other extra narrow....
the wife loves it for the garden ended up with a crack 1/2 way down and about an inch in...
used a 316 stainless rod....working again.....

Most Bulldog is still British made as well.

Braze it, temper it in hard wood fire.
Clean it up, warm it in a wood fire, wipe when hot with old engine oil.

It will live again.

@frank horton how come u used a stainless rod? just becase it burns cooler?

no i was abbusing it really bad using it as a lever to lever a metpost out of the ground stupid i should have used the pick
